How it works

How do you translate an English recording into Dutch?

To translate English audio to Dutch, drop the file on this page; it is set to English speech and Dutch text. The English is written down in short pieces, every line is translated with the time it was spoken, and the Dutch transcript appears for you to read and save.

  1. 1

    Pick the English recording

MP3, M4A, WAV or another audio file: a client interview, a webinar, a voice note from a colleague.

  2. 2

    Written down, then translated

English first, Dutch second, line by line. Each recording may run up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Keep the Dutch version

Copy it, or download text or Word. Original shows the English transcript with the same times.

What does the Dutch transcript look like?

Paragraphs of Dutch, each starting with the time it was said, ready to copy into notes or save as a Word document. The Word file is headed with the recording’s length and “Translated: English → Dutch”, so a colleague knows at once what it is.

Keep the times when you share it. If someone asks what the speaker really said at a given moment, the time leads straight to the English words in the recording, and the English transcript has the same times.

Does the Dutch address people as je or u?

As je, except where English is clearly polite. A plain request became “Kun je me het rapport voor vrijdag sturen?”, while “Please sit down, sir” came back as “Gaat u zitten, meneer.” For a transcript of a formal meeting or a client call, change je to u by hand.

How does spoken English sound once it is written in Dutch?

Close to how a Dutch speaker would say it, with the English rhythm still showing. “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” became “Nou, je weet, het is een nogal grote zaak”: the filler survived word for word, and the hedge turned into “nogal”.

  • Fillers

“You know” and “well” come through as “je weet” and “nou”. Leave them in a verbatim record; drop them in a summary.

  • A whole room

“Thank you all for coming today” became “Bedankt allemaal voor het komen vandaag”, with allemaal for the group.

  • Verbs at the end

Dutch moves the verb to the end of a clause: “dat ze morgen terug zou bellen”. Lines are translated in batches, so the order still reads naturally.

What should you check before quoting the Dutch text?

Numbers, times and any word the English transcript misheard, because a misheard word is translated as it was heard. Prices came back Dutch style with “$1.250”, the time as “15:30 uur”, and names exactly as transcribed.

“She” stays a woman in Dutch (“dat ze”), and “the teachers” became “De leraren”, the plural Dutch uses for a mixed group.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow.

FAQ

Questions about translating English audio into Dutch

Is the English to Dutch audio translator free?

Yes. Translate up to 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes long, with no account. The Dutch transcript, the English one and all downloads come with it.

Can I download the Dutch as a Word file?

Yes. Choose Word: the document carries the file name, its length and “Translated: English → Dutch”, followed by the Dutch paragraphs with their times, which you can switch off.

Does it speak the Dutch translation aloud?

No. The Dutch comes back as written text, a Word document or subtitle files. No Dutch audio is made.

What if part of the recording is already in Dutch?

This page treats all the speech as English. For a recording where people switch between English and Dutch, use the main audio translator and set the spoken language to Detect automatically.

Does the transcript name the speakers?

No. The Dutch transcript gives the words and the times, not who said them. NoteOwl on a Mac labels every speaker in its own transcripts.

Where does my recording go?

It stays on your device. Short pieces of the sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the English text to a cloud AI translation service, and each throws away what it received. NoteOwl stores no audio and no text.
