How it works

How do you translate English audio into German?

To translate English audio to German, drop the recording here; the page is set for English speech and German text. The English is transcribed in short pieces and translated a batch of lines at a time, and every German line keeps its time. Then read and save.

  1. 1

    Drop in the English recording

MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC or OGG: a client call, a webinar, an interview.

  2. 2

    English, then German

Transcribed in English, then translated into German. Up to 30 minutes per recording.

  3. 3

    Keep the German

Copy it, or save TXT or Word; Original shows the English.

Does the German transcript use Sie or du?

Sie, consistently. Even the chatty “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” came back as “Nun, wissen Sie, es ist eine ziemlich große Sache”. For a business call that’s right; for an interview between friends or colleagues on du terms, change it.

Changing it touches the verbs as well as the pronoun: “wissen Sie” becomes “weißt du”.

Why does the German order differ from the English?

German puts verbs elsewhere. “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “Können Sie mir den Bericht vor Freitag schicken?”, with “schicken” at the end. So lines go out in batches: each German line is written with its neighbours in view, yet keeps its own time.

What does German decide about people that English leaves open?

Gender. “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” became “Unsere Ärztin sagte, sie würde morgen zurückrufen”, a woman doctor, thanks to “she”. Without such a clue German uses the masculine: “The teachers were tired” became “Die Lehrer waren nach der Reise müde”.

How are figures written in the German transcript?

“6.5 percent” became “6,5 Prozent” and “$1,250” became “1.250 $”, with the sign after the number. Before quoting a figure in a German report, compare it with the English transcript at the same time: a number misheard in English is translated as heard.

FAQ

Questions about English recordings in German

Is the English to German audio translator free?

Yes. 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes each, with no account to make. The German transcript, the English one and every download are included.

How good is the German?

In our test of translation from English, German scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. What needs your eye is mostly style: Sie or du, gendered words, and names.

Can I save the German as a Word file?

Yes. The document takes your recording’s name and opens with its length, “Translated: English → German” and the date, then the German paragraphs; untick “Times in the text” to leave the times out.

Does it speak the German?

No. You get German text, a Word file or subtitles, never an audio version.

What about a recording in both English and German?

On this page every part is transcribed as English. For a conversation that moves between the two, use the main audio translator and set the spoken language to Detect automatically.

Is anything stored?

No. The recording stays on your device; short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English text to a cloud AI translation service, which discard it after answering. NoteOwl keeps no audio and no text.
