How it works

How do you get an English recording in Russian?

To translate English audio to Russian, drop the recording here; the page expects English speech and writes Russian. The English is transcribed in short pieces, then translated in batches, and each Russian line keeps the time it was spoken. Copy the Russian or save it as a document.

  1. 1

    Add the English audio

An MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG: a webinar, a podcast episode, a call or an interview.

  2. 2

    English becomes Russian

Transcribed first, then translated. Up to 30 minutes of any one recording.

  3. 3

    Save the Russian

Copy it, or save TXT or Word; the English transcript stays one click away under Original.

What do you get back in Russian?

A Russian transcript in Cyrillic, set out in paragraphs with the time each one starts. It saves as plain text or as a Word document headed with the recording’s length, “Translated: English → Russian” and the date. The English transcript has the same times.

How are English names written in the Russian?

In Cyrillic, as Russian writes foreign names: “Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez” became “Д-р Патель и Мария Лопес”. When you need the original spelling for a report or a search, switch to Original and copy the name from the English transcript.

A name misheard in the English transcript is carried into the Russian as it was heard, so an unusual surname is worth checking against the recording at its time.

Does casual English come out formal in Russian?

Politely, yes. “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” became “Ну, знаете, это довольно серьёзно”: the filler kept, with the polite вы form “знаете”, and the vague “kind of a big deal” turned into “rather serious”. A speaker greeting a room reads naturally.

Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal.
RussianНу, знаете, это довольно серьёзно.
Thank you all for coming today.
RussianСпасибо всем, что пришли сегодня.

How does Russian show that the doctor is a woman?

Through the verb. “Our doctor said she would call back” became “Наш врач сказала”: “врач” stays a masculine noun, and the feminine “сказала” tells you it is a woman, exactly as Russian speakers say it.

Plural verbs and adjectives carry no gender in Russian, and “учителя” covers a mixed group, so “The teachers were tired after the trip” came back as “Учителя были уставшими после поездки”. For women only, Russian would say “учительницы”.

How reliable is English to Russian translation here?

Reliable enough to read and work from. In our test of fifty English sentences, translation into Russian scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Russian runs a little longer than English, so expect a slightly longer document.

FAQ

Questions about English audio translated into Russian

Is the English to Russian audio translator free?

Yes. You can translate 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes long, without an account. The Russian, the English and every download come with it.

Can I open the Russian in Word?

Yes. Save Word for a document with the recording’s name and length, the line “Translated: English → Russian”, the date and the Russian paragraphs. Times can be left in or turned off.

Can it translate a podcast episode into Russian?

Yes, if you have the episode as an audio file such as MP3. Episodes longer than 30 minutes are translated up to that point.

What if someone speaks Russian in the recording?

This page treats every part as English. If the speakers switch between English and Russian, use the main audio translator with the spoken language set to Detect automatically.

Does the Russian transcript show who is speaking?

No. It has words and times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in the transcripts it makes.

Is my recording kept anywhere?

No. The file stays in your browser; short pieces of the sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English text to a cloud AI translation service, each of which discards what it was sent. NoteOwl stores nothing.
