How it works

How do you add German subtitles to an English video?

To translate an English video to German, drop it on the page. Your browser separates the sound, the English is transcribed and translated, and the German is cut into subtitles that start as the English words are spoken. Download the SRT or VTT for your player.

  1. 1

    Drop in the English video

MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V or 3GP; the picture never leaves your device.

  2. 2

    German subtitles are laid out

English is transcribed, translated into German and timed. Up to 30 minutes per video.

  3. 3

    Download SRT or VTT

Or switch to Original for the English subtitles on the same timing.

Will German subtitles fit on screen?

Yes. German runs about a tenth longer than English and has long compounds, so it is laid out as subtitles on its own terms: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, breaking only between words, each shown long enough to read.

A word like “Unabhängigkeitserklärung” fills more than half a line on its own, so the German can need more subtitles than the English for the same stretch of speech. Each one still begins when the English it translates is spoken.

How does German word order affect subtitles?

German often splits a verb and sends part to the end: “The meeting is on October 16…” became “Das Treffen findet am 16. Oktober 2026 um 15:30 Uhr statt”. The German is cut into subtitles after translating, so each subtitle follows a German sentence, not the English one.

How do German subtitles address viewers?

Formally. “Thank you all for coming today” became “Vielen Dank an alle, dass Sie heute gekommen sind”, with Sie, and “Please sit down, sir” became “Bitte setzen Sie sich, mein Herr”. Many German creators speak to viewers as du or ihr, so adjust a casual channel’s subtitles.

How are dates and times shown in German subtitles?

“October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.” became “am 16. Oktober 2026 um 15:30 Uhr”: the day takes a full stop and the time runs on the 24-hour clock with “Uhr”. Exclamations keep the English “Wow”: “Wow! Das ist erstaunlich!”.

Names are left as the English transcript spelled them: “Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session” became “Dr. Patel und Maria Lopez werden die Sitzung leiten”.

Making videos for German-speaking viewers?

NoteOwl understands German and English on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. If your video already has English subtitles, the subtitle translator keeps their timing.

FAQ

German subtitles for English videos: questions

Is the English to German video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, with no account and no watermark. You can download German SRT and VTT and the English subtitles.

Is the video dubbed into German?

No. The page makes German subtitles and leaves your video and its English sound unchanged.

How good is the German?

In our test of translation from English, German scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Before publishing, check Sie or du, names, and words for people that carry a gender.

Are the subtitles right for Austria and Switzerland?

They are standard German, read wherever German is spoken. For Swiss viewers, replace “ß” with “ss”, since Swiss German doesn’t use it; the translation writes “ß”, as in “große”.

Where can I use the German SRT?

YouTube Studio’s Subtitles page, Vimeo, and editors such as Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve all take SRT. For an HTML5 player or a course platform, use the VTT.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Only short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, and the English text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard what they receive. The picture stays on your device and NoteOwl stores nothing.
