How it works

How do you translate English audio into Italian?

To translate English audio to Italian, drop the recording here; the page expects English speech and writes Italian. It transcribes the English in short pieces, then translates the lines, each keeping the moment it was said. Read the Italian, then save it.

  1. 1

    Choose the English recording

MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG or another audio file: a lesson, a podcast episode, a client call.

  2. 2

    Transcribed, then translated

English text first, then Italian, for up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Keep the Italian

Copy it, or save TXT or Word; switch to Original for the English transcript.

What does the Italian transcript look like?

Italian paragraphs in the order of the recording, each marked with the time it was spoken. Saved as Word, it opens with the recording’s length, the line “Translated: English → Italian” and the date, ready to file or share.

Untick “Times in the text” for clean paragraphs to paste into an email or a report. Keep them while you check the translation: a time leads you straight back to the English words in the recording.

Will the Italian transcript use tu or Lei?

Tu, unless the English signals respect. The casual “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” became “Beh, sai, è una cosa piuttosto importante”, with tu, while “Please sit down, sir” became “Per favore si sieda, signore”, with Lei.

For a formal interview, read the Italian for tu forms and change the ones that should be Lei. Spoken fillers come through as Italian ones (“beh”, “sai”) rather than vanishing, so a quote keeps the speaker’s hesitations; trim them if you are quoting for print.

Why might a woman become masculine in the Italian?

Because Italian needs a gender that English often only hints at. In our test, “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” became “Il nostro medico ha detto che richiamerà domani”: masculine, with the “she” gone. Fix such lines when you know who was meant.

  • Job titles

“Il medico” is the default; a woman doctor can be “la dottoressa”.

  • Past participles

Italian ones agree with their subject, so “è venuto” or “è venuta” has to choose.

  • Groups

A mixed group takes the masculine plural, as Italian grammar expects.

How well does English turn into Italian?

Well. In our test of translation from English, Italian scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. The weak spots are the ones above: gender, tu or Lei, and any word the English transcript misheard.

A misheard English word is translated as it was heard, so if an Italian sentence makes no sense, switch to the English transcript, find the same time and listen to that moment.

FAQ

Questions about English recordings in Italian

Is the English to Italian audio translator free?

Yes: 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes long, with no account. The Italian transcript, the English one and all the downloads come with it.

Can I get the Italian as subtitles?

Yes. The SRT and VTT downloads put the Italian lines at their times. For a video you plan to publish with Italian subtitles, the video translator lays them out for the screen.

Does it speak the Italian aloud?

No. The Italian comes as text, a Word document or subtitles; the page doesn’t produce a spoken Italian version.

What if the speakers switch into Italian?

This page treats all the speech as English. For a recording that moves between English and Italian, use the main audio translator and leave the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Are speakers labelled?

No. The web transcript gives words and times without names. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in its own transcripts.

Does my recording leave my device?

The file stays with you. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English text to a cloud AI translation service; each returns its result and discards what it got. NoteOwl stores nothing.
