How it works
How do you translate a Malay recording into English?
To translate Malay audio to English, add the recording here; the page listens for Malay and writes English. The Malay is transcribed in short pieces and each line is translated with its time. Read the English transcript, and open Original for the Malay wording.
- 1
Choose the Malay recording
A voice message, a lecture, a radio clip or a call, as MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.
- 2
Malay, then English
Transcribed in Malay, then translated, for the first 30 minutes of each file.
- 3
Save the English
Copy it or download text or Word; the Malay transcript is a separate download.
How does the English handle dia and beliau?
It has to pick he or she, because Malay doesn’t say. “Baru-baru ini beliau telah tewas kepada Raonic”, with the respectful beliau, came back as “Recently he was defeated by Raonic”. In a conversation, nearby lines usually settle who it is; otherwise listen again.
The respect that beliau carries has no English pronoun of its own, so it disappears in translation. If it matters, as with an elder or an official, note it beside your quote.
What happens to Malay measurements and names?
They’re read in context. Batu means both stone and mile: “105 batu sejam (165 km/j)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”, while “Lima belas daripada batu ini” became “Fifteen of these stones”. “Taufan Fred” became “Hurricane Fred”.
- Taufan Fred kini mempunyai kelajuan angin 105 batu sejam (165 km/j)…
- EnglishHurricane Fred now has wind speeds of 105 miles per hour (165 km/h)…
- Lima belas daripada batu ini…
- EnglishFifteen of these stones…
- Piquet Jr. dipecat selepas Grand Prix Hungaria 2009.
- EnglishPiquet Jr. was dismissed after the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

How well does spoken Malay come through in English?
Strongly. In our test, Malay speech was transcribed cleanly and came out strong in English, with lines that read close to the human translations. The Malay transcript keeps Malaysian spellings such as kerana and bahawa, so you can quote the original too.
What should you check in the English?
English words said in Malay, and names. Malaysians often drop English into Malay; the transcript usually keeps them in English spelling, but one test clip heard “Internet” as “Ethernet”, and a misheard word is translated as misheard.
Meetings in English or Chinese as well?
NoteOwl on a Mac understands English and Chinese, though not Malay, and transcribes recordings and meetings in them with unlimited transcription, labelling speakers and keeping them searchable. For a Malay transcript only, use Malay audio to text.
FAQ
Questions about translating Malay audio into English
Is the Malay to English audio translator free?
Yes. 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes from each, without an account. You get the English, the Malay transcript and every download.
What if the speakers mix Malay and English?
This page writes every part as Malay first. For a meeting that switches back and forth, as many in Malaysia do, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
Can I translate an Indonesian recording here?
Use the Indonesian to English page instead: it transcribes with Indonesian spelling, which suits speech from Indonesia better.
Can I translate a Malay voice note from WhatsApp?
Yes. Save the voice note out of the chat, typically as an .opus or .ogg file, and add it to the page; a short note is ready in English in seconds.
Does the English say who is speaking?
No. It has words and times without names. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in the transcripts it makes.
Is my recording kept?
No. Short pieces of its sound go from your browser to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Malay text to a cloud AI translation service, and each discards what it receives. NoteOwl stores nothing.
