FaceTime transcription for recorded calls
FaceTime transcription needs a recording, and FaceTime records only audio calls with one other person. Save that call’s audio from Notes, or take a screen recording you made, drop it here, and get the words with a time on each paragraph.

How it works
How do you transcribe a FaceTime call?
Start from a recording of it. For a recorded FaceTime audio call, open the Call Recordings folder in Notes and save the audio as a file. Then drop that file, or a screen recording, on the converter for a timed transcript.
- 1
Open Call Recordings in Notes
Recorded FaceTime audio calls are saved there automatically, on your iPhone or your Mac.
- 2
Save the audio
On iPhone, open the recording’s transcript view and choose Save Audio to Files. On a Mac, Control-click the recording and choose Save Attachment.
- 3
Drop it here
The converter transcribes up to 30 minutes of each file and puts a time on every paragraph.
Can FaceTime record a call?
Only an audio call with one other person, and only in some countries and regions. During the call, choose Call Recording; the recording lands in the Call Recordings folder in Notes. Apple’s guides describe no way to record a FaceTime video call or a Group FaceTime call.

Doesn’t Notes already transcribe a FaceTime call?
In some languages, yes: Notes shows a transcript of a recorded call, with each speaker identified, in select regions and languages. The converter is for the rest: calls in languages Notes doesn’t transcribe, and times, Word files or subtitles Notes doesn’t give you.
On a Mac, Notes transcribes audio on Macs with M1 or later, when the Mac’s language is English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean or Chinese. The converter detects the language itself, so a FaceTime call in Hindi or Dutch comes back as text too.
Can a Mac screen recording of a call be transcribed?
Yes. A screen recording made with Shift-Command-5 is saved to your desktop as a .mov file, and the converter reads MOV. Its sound depends on what you chose: on macOS 27, Include System Audio adds the Mac’s sound; on macOS 26 only a microphone can be recorded.
The guide to recording your Mac’s audio explains each option and the Mac versions that have it.
Want every FaceTime call transcribed on your Mac?
NoteOwl records FaceTime calls on your Mac, audio or video, one-to-one or group, from your microphone and the Mac’s own audio. When the call ends it writes the transcript, labelling who spoke, unlimited, with on-device AI models.
It hears calls taken on the Mac itself. A call that started on your iPhone can be moved to your Mac in FaceTime, and NoteOwl can record it from there.
FAQ
Questions about transcribing FaceTime calls
Is this FaceTime transcription free?
Yes. With no account or Apple ID, you can transcribe 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes each, and keep the text as Word, a text file or subtitles.
Can I record a FaceTime call on my iPhone?
An audio call with one other person, yes, where Apple offers Call Recording: tap the more button during the call, then Call Recording. The recording is saved to the Call Recordings folder in Notes. FaceTime has no recording for video calls.
Is my FaceTime recording uploaded?
No. The file stays on your phone or Mac. Your browser sends only short pieces of its sound, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each one and discards it. NoteOwl keeps no audio and no text.
Will the transcript show who said what on the FaceTime call?
No. The converter writes one timed transcript without names. Notes identifies the speaker of each statement in the languages it transcribes, and NoteOwl on a Mac labels you and the other side of every call.
What if the FaceTime call lasted longer than 30 minutes?
The first 30 minutes are transcribed, and the page says so above the transcript. Split the recording for the rest, or let NoteOwl on a Mac record your calls, with no limit on length.
Where do FaceTime call recordings go on a Mac?
To the Call Recordings folder in the Notes app, along with the transcript where Notes makes one. Control-click the recording in the note and choose Save Attachment to get a file you can drop here.
