How it works
How do you transcribe a Jitsi Meet recording?
Stop the recording so Jitsi saves the file to your device, then drop that WebM on the converter, no conversion needed. It reads the sound, transcribes it in short pieces, and shows the result with times as it goes.
- 1
Stop the recording
Jitsi writes the local recording to your device when you stop it, or when the file reaches its maximum size.
- 2
Find the WebM
It is saved in your device’s storage as a .webm file with the room’s video and sound.
- 3
Drop it here
Up to 30 minutes of each recording are transcribed, paragraph by paragraph, with times.
How can a Jitsi Meet call be recorded?
Jitsi’s own answer is “multiple methods”. The built-in one records locally, saving the room’s video and sound to your device as WebM. A server can also offer Dropbox, a live stream you record on the streaming site, or recording on the server itself.

Why did a Jitsi local recording stop by itself?
It reached the maximum file size. Jitsi stops a local recording either when you stop it or when the file hits its size limit, and saves the WebM at that moment. Start recording again to carry on; each file can be transcribed on its own.
Does recording work on every Jitsi server?
Not necessarily. Whoever runs a self-hosted Jitsi Meet can switch local recording off, and Dropbox, streaming and server recording only appear when the server is set up for them. If there’s no way to record, ask the person who runs the server.
Can the converter read the WebM file Jitsi saves?
Yes. WebM is one of the formats it takes, with or without video, and it only needs the sound, so there’s no reason to turn the file into an MP4 first. For more on the format itself, see the WebM converter.

FAQ
Questions about transcribing Jitsi Meet recordings
Is this Jitsi Meet transcription free?
Yes. You can transcribe 3 Jitsi recordings every day, as much as 30 minutes of each, with no sign-up. Copy the text, or save it as Word, a text file or subtitles.
Does it work with my own Jitsi server as well as meet.jit.si?
Yes. The converter works on the recording file, not on the meeting, so it doesn’t matter which Jitsi Meet server held the call. Any WebM, MP4 or audio file of it will do.
Is my Jitsi recording uploaded?
No. The WebM is read on your device. Only short pieces of its sound are sent, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each and discards it; the video isn’t sent at all. NoteOwl keeps no audio and no text.
Does the transcript show who spoke in the Jitsi call?
No. The converter writes the call as one timed transcript, without names. Tag each speaker yourself with the help of the times, or use NoteOwl on a Mac, which labels speakers for you.
What if the Jitsi recording is longer than 30 minutes?
The converter transcribes its first 30 minutes and says so above the transcript. Cut the WebM into parts to get the rest, or record calls with NoteOwl on a Mac, where there’s no limit on length.
