How it works

How do you turn English subtitles into Dutch?

Drop the SRT or VTT file here; the page already translates into Dutch. Press Translate, and a few dozen subtitles at a time come back in Dutch, each one at the moment of the line it replaces. Skim the Dutch, then save it.

  1. 1

    Choose the subtitle file

English is recognised on its own; for French, German or any other source, pick it under From.

  2. 2

    Translate into Dutch

Neighbouring subtitles go together, so a sentence that runs over two of them stays readable in Dutch.

  3. 3

    Save the Dutch subtitles

SRT, VTT, or a bilingual SRT. The name gains the code nl, as in Aflevering 1.nl.srt.

Do Dutch subtitles need more room than English ones?

A little. In our test, Dutch translations ran about a tenth longer than the English sentences. A subtitle’s time can’t stretch, so a longer Dutch line gets two fuller lines instead, never a third line and never an extra subtitle.

Lines aim for 42 characters, and viewers get about 17 characters a second to read them. If a Dutch subtitle looks crowded in your player, trim a word or two; the timing itself is already right.

Will the Dutch subtitles say je or u?

Mostly je. Everyday lines came back informal (“Kun je me het rapport voor vrijdag sturen?”), and only a line with “sir” turned polite: “Gaat u zitten, meneer.” For a company video or a formal talk, search the file for je and switch to u where it fits.

How do Dutch subtitles write prices, dates and times?

With a decimal comma, a full stop between thousands and the day before the month. The 24-hour clock came back with a colon, “15:30 uur”; many Dutch style guides prefer “15.30 uur”, as the Dutch test sentences wrote it.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
DutchDe vergadering is op 16 oktober 2026 om 15:30 uur.
Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow.
DutchOnze arts zei dat ze morgen terug zou bellen.
Wow! That’s amazing!
DutchWauw! Dat is geweldig!

Does the translation use Dutch spellings of names and places?

For well-known places, yes: in our test “Timbuktu” became “Timboektoe”. People’s names stay exactly as your file spells them, and so does “Dr. Patel”. If a channel prefers the international spelling of a place, change it once with search and replace.

How good is translation from English into Dutch?

Strong. In our test, translation into Dutch scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. The Dutch is standard written Dutch, the spelling the Netherlands and Flanders share, so read it once for words your own viewers would say differently.

FAQ

Questions about Dutch subtitle translation

Is translating subtitles to Dutch free?

Yes. You can translate 3 subtitle files a day into Dutch, each up to 30,000 characters of text, without an account or a watermark.

Can I translate German or French subtitles into Dutch?

Yes. Choose the file’s language under From, or leave it on detect, and the subtitles go straight into Dutch. Our scores were measured from English, so read a few lines of any other pair before you publish.

Will Belgian viewers understand the Dutch?

The subtitles are written in standard Dutch, which uses the same spelling in the Netherlands and Flanders. A few everyday words differ between the two, so a Flemish channel may want to swap them.

Do the Dutch subtitles stay in sync with the video?

Yes. Each subtitle keeps its number and its start and end time from your file, so the Dutch version lines up exactly where the original did.

Can I keep the English line above the Dutch one?

Yes. The bilingual SRT holds both lines in every subtitle, the original on top and the Dutch below it, at the same time. It suits Dutch learners and anyone checking the translation.

Is my subtitle file uploaded or kept?

Your browser opens the file. Only the subtitle text goes out, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service that translates it and discards it. NoteOwl keeps neither the original nor the Dutch file.
