How it works
How do you put English subtitles on a Dutch video?
To translate a Dutch video to English, drop it on this page. Its sound is transcribed as Dutch, every line is put into English, and the English is cut into subtitles timed to the Dutch speech. Save the English SRT and load it with the video.
- 1
Drop in the Dutch video
A vlog, a webinar, a product demo or a family video, as MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM.
- 2
English subtitles appear
Dutch is transcribed, then translated. Each video can run up to 30 minutes.
- 3
Save SRT or VTT
Original holds the Dutch subtitles, with the same timing, if you want both.
How well does Dutch speech turn into English subtitles?
Well enough to follow, with a careful look before publishing. The Dutch is transcribed cleanly, yet in our speech-to-English test Dutch scored lower than most languages, though the meaning came through. Play the video once with the English on and fix what reads oddly.
Do English subtitles need fewer lines than Dutch ones?
Often a few. Dutch ran about a tenth longer than English in our test, so the same speech usually needs a little less English. The English is cut into its own subtitles, at most 2 lines of 42 characters, each readable at 17 characters a second.
That means the English subtitles needn’t pair up one for one with the Dutch subtitles under Original. Both sets start when the words are spoken, so either can be published on its own.
What happens to Dutch clock times and units on screen?
They switch to English form. “Om precies 8.46 uur” came back as “At exactly 8:46”, without a.m. or p.m. because the Dutch had none, and “165 km/u” became “165 km/h”. Numbers the speaker said as words reach the screen as digits.
- Om precies 8.46 uur werd het doodstil in de stad.
- EnglishAt exactly 8:46, the city fell deathly silent.
- Piquet jr. werd in 2009 ontslagen na de Grand Prix van Hongarije.
- EnglishPiquet Jr. was dismissed in 2009 after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Which names should you check before you publish?
Names and acronyms, since the English spells whatever the Dutch transcript heard. In our test the ministry acronym METI appeared as “Meti”, and a man called Rolando was subtitled as “Ronaldo”. A quick search of the SRT for every name fixes them in one pass.

FAQ
Questions about English subtitles for Dutch videos
Is the Dutch to English video translator free?
Yes. Translate 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark. English and Dutch subtitles both download free.
Will it dub the video into English?
No. You get English subtitle files, not a new soundtrack, and the video itself is left untouched.
How do I add the English subtitles on YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, select the video, add English and upload the SRT with timing. Viewers can then turn English on from the subtitle menu.
What if some speakers in the video talk in English?
This page transcribes all the speech as Dutch. For a video that mixes the two languages, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
Does my video leave my computer?
No. The browser takes out the sound and sends short pieces of it to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Dutch text to a cloud AI translation service; each discards what it receives. The picture is never sent.
Do the subtitles say who is speaking?
No. The English subtitles carry the words and their timing only. NoteOwl on a Mac adds each speaker’s name to the subtitles it saves.
