How it works

How do you translate a Dutch recording into English?

To translate Dutch audio to English, drop the file here: the page expects Dutch speech and writes English. It transcribes the Dutch in short pieces, translates the lines in batches and gives each one the time it was spoken. Read the English, and open Original for the Dutch.

  1. 1

    Add the Dutch recording

A supplier call, a vergadering, a voice message from a relative: MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.

  2. 2

    Dutch first, then English

Transcribed as Dutch, then translated into English. Up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Read, copy or download

Text or Word for the English; the Dutch transcript saves separately with the same times.

How well does spoken Dutch come through in English?

The meaning comes through. Dutch speech is transcribed cleanly, but our speech-to-English test scored Dutch lower than most languages, so give the English a careful read before you quote it, and check important lines against the Dutch transcript.

The translation follows what was said, not a neater version of it. One Dutch test passage split a single idea into two sentences, “Om precies 8.46 uur werd het doodstil in de stad. Dit was ook precies het moment…”, and the English kept both: “At exactly 8:46, the city fell deathly silent. That was also precisely the moment…”.

Which mistakes are worth looking for?

Names and words the transcript heard wrongly, because the English translates whatever the Dutch transcript says. In our test, Rolando Mendoza was heard as “Ronaldo” and stayed Ronaldo in English, and “oververhitting” (overheating) was heard as “overbegetting” and came out as “over‑exposure”.

Sometimes the translation repairs a slip on its own: the currency code GBP, transcribed as “GPP”, came back correctly as “(GBP)”. Either way, the time beside the paragraph takes you to the spot in the recording.

What happens to Dutch times, units and numbers?

They are turned into English conventions. The Dutch “8.46 uur” came back as “8:46”, “km/u” as “km/h”, and a number spoken as a word was written as a digit: “één Brits pond” became “1 British pound”.

Om precies 8.46 uur
EnglishAt exactly 8:46
105 mijl per uur (165 km/u)
English105 miles per hour (165 km/h)
Cuomo (53) werd eerder dit jaar ingehuldigd
EnglishCuomo, 53, was inaugurated earlier this year

Will the English be shorter than the Dutch?

Usually a little. Going the other way, our Dutch translations ran about a tenth longer than the English, so an English transcript of a Dutch meeting tends to read tighter. Dutch verbs that wait at the end of a clause move forward in English.

FAQ

Questions about translating Dutch audio into English

Is the Dutch to English audio translator free?

Yes. 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. You get the English transcript, the Dutch one and every download.

Can I translate a Dutch WhatsApp voice message?

Yes. Save the voice message as a file, usually OPUS or OGG, and drop it on the page. A short message is one of the quickest things to translate here.

Do I also get the Dutch transcript?

Yes. Switch the result to Original to read the Dutch, and save it as text or SRT. It carries the same times as the English, so any line can be matched.

What if the speakers switch to English halfway?

This page transcribes everything as Dutch. For a meeting that mixes Dutch and English, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Does the English show who said what?

No. The English transcript lists the words and their times without speaker names. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in the transcripts it makes.

Is the recording sent anywhere?

The file stays in your browser. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Dutch text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard what they receive, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
