How it works
How do you put Chinese subtitles on an English video?
To translate an English video to Chinese, drop it on this page. The sound is taken out in your browser and transcribed in English; each line is translated into simplified Chinese and cut into subtitles that appear while the English is spoken. Then download the Chinese SRT.

Add the English video
MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM: a tutorial, a product demo, a talk or a vlog.

Chinese subtitles are made
English is transcribed, translated and laid out as Chinese subtitles, for up to 30 minutes of each video.

Download the .zh file
SRT or VTT. The Original switch gives the English subtitles with the same timing.
How much space do Chinese subtitles take on screen?
Less than English, by about a fifth. Chinese says the same in about a third of the characters, so even with lines of 16 characters, read at 9 a second, many subtitles need one line: seven of our ten test sentences did.
The Chinese is cut into subtitles after it’s translated, so the number of Chinese subtitles needn’t match the English ones; each still sits inside the time its English sentence was spoken.
What should you fix in Chinese subtitles before publishing?
Latin names and long numbers, which count letter by letter. In our check, “Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session” was cut so “Dr.” sat alone on a line and “Lopez” started the next subtitle. Join split names by hand in the SRT.
Names
Keep a name on one line, or write it in Chinese characters if your viewers expect that.
Dates
Our check broke “2026 年 10 月” from “16 日下午 3:30”; moving a word mends it.
Spaces
The translation puts spaces around numbers. Taking them out saves room on a short line.
How do prices, times and exclamations look in Chinese subtitles?
Arabic digits and full-width marks. “$1,250” stayed in dollars with its comma, a percentage became “6.5%”, the meeting time “下午 3:30” on a 12-hour clock, and “Wow! That’s amazing!” became “哇!太神奇了!”, short enough for a single line.
- The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.
- Chinese subtitle价格上涨了 6.5%,达到了 $1,250。
- The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
- Chinese subtitle会议将于 2026 年 10 月 16 日下午 3:30 举行。
- Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session.
- Chinese subtitleDr. Patel 和 Maria Lopez 将主持本次会议。
- Wow! That’s amazing!
- Chinese subtitle哇!太神奇了!

Which Chinese characters do the subtitles use?
Simplified characters, the form read in mainland China and Singapore. On YouTube, upload them as Chinese (Simplified). For viewers in Taiwan or Hong Kong, who read traditional characters, convert the SRT first and check words that differ by region.
Viewers are spoken to with 你, the everyday “you”, which suits most channels. In our test of 50 sentences, translation into Chinese scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with.
Publishing for English and Chinese viewers?
NoteOwl understands Chinese and English on your Mac. Import an MP4 and it transcribes it with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles naming each speaker. If English subtitles exist already, the subtitle translator keeps their timing to the millisecond.
FAQ
Chinese subtitles for English videos: questions
Is the English to Chinese video translator free?
Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and nothing added to the picture. Chinese and English subtitle files both download.
Does it add a Chinese voice?
No. You get Chinese subtitles; the sound and the picture of your video stay as they were.
Can I burn the Chinese subtitles into the video?
Yes, with a video editor that imports SRT. Choose a font that has Chinese characters, or the subtitles may show as empty boxes.
Can I publish English and Chinese tracks together?
Yes. Switch to Original to save the English subtitles, then upload both; viewers pick a language from the player’s menu.
Does it write Cantonese?
No. It writes standard written Chinese in simplified characters, not colloquial Cantonese.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Only short pieces of the sound leave your browser, for a cloud AI transcription service, followed by the English text for a cloud AI translation service; neither keeps them. The picture is never sent.
