How it works

How do you translate an English recording into Chinese?

To translate English audio to Chinese, drop the recording on this page. It is transcribed as English in short pieces, and the lines are then translated into simplified Chinese in batches, each one still marked with when it was said. Read the Chinese and save it.

  1. 1

    Drop the English recording

A sales call, a webinar, an interview or a voice note, as MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC or another audio file.

  2. 2

    English text, then Chinese

The words are transcribed in English and then translated. Recordings are covered up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Copy or save

Paste the Chinese into a message, or save TXT or Word. The English sits under Show → Original.

What does the Chinese transcript contain?

The recording in simplified Chinese, one paragraph per stretch of speech, each with its start time. A Word copy opens with the file name, its length and “Translated: English → Chinese”; plain text and subtitle files are there too, all named with .zh.

Chinese takes about a third as many characters as English for the same meaning, so a long English call becomes a compact Chinese document. The times are the way back: any paragraph that reads oddly can be found in the recording in seconds.

Does the Chinese keep “he” and “she”?

Yes, in writing. 他 and 她 sound the same when spoken, but they are different characters, and the translation follows the English: “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” became “我们的医生说她明天会回电话。”. Plurals such as 老师们 (teachers) don’t mark gender.

So the Chinese is only as sure as the English transcript. If the recording said “she” and the transcript heard “he”, the Chinese will say 他; check the English line at the same time when a person matters.

Is the Chinese formal or everyday?

Everyday, with polite touches. “You” became 你, never 您, across our tests, while “Thank you all for coming today” became “感谢各位今天的到来。”, with the courteous 各位 for “everyone”. For a letter to a client or a senior partner, swap 你 for 您.

  • “You know”

Kept as a spoken filler: “嗯,你知道的,这算是一件大事。”

  • “Sir”

    Became 先生 with a polite 请: “请坐,先生。”

  • Requests

“Can you send me the report…?” became a direct “你能…发给我吗?”.

Can readers in Taiwan or Hong Kong use the transcript?

They can read it, but it is written in simplified characters, the standard in mainland China and Singapore. For a traditional-character document, convert the text after you download it, and read it once for words those regions say differently.

Calls in English and Mandarin every week?

NoteOwl understands Chinese and English on your Mac. It transcribes calls in either with unlimited transcription, tells the speakers apart and keeps a searchable record of what was agreed. For an English transcript without translation, use audio to text.

FAQ

English recordings in Chinese: questions

Is the English to Chinese audio translator free?

Yes. You can run 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, without an account, and download the Chinese and the English in every format.

How good is the Chinese?

In our test of 50 sentences, translation into Chinese scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Names, figures and the choice of 你 or 您 are worth checking before you send it on.

Can I get the Chinese as a Word document?

Yes. The Word button saves a .zh.docx with the recording’s name, its length and the translation line at the top, then the paragraphs, with or without times.

Will it speak the Chinese?

No. It produces Chinese text and files to read, not a Chinese voice recording.

What about a recording that is partly in Mandarin?

This page transcribes everything as English. For a mixed recording, the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically handles each part in its own language.

Is my recording sent anywhere?

The file stays on your device. Your browser sends small pieces of its sound to a cloud AI transcription service and the English lines to a cloud AI translation service, and both drop what they received after answering. NoteOwl keeps nothing.
