How it works

How do you add French subtitles to an English video?

To translate an English video to French, drop it on this page. Its sound is transcribed in English, each line is translated into French, and the French is laid out as subtitles at the moments the English is spoken. Download the French SRT and add it to the video.

  1. 1

    Drop in the English video

An MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM file. Only the sound is read; the picture never leaves your device.

  2. 2

    French subtitles appear

English is transcribed, then translated into French. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download French SRT or VTT

Or switch to Original for the English subtitles, with the same timing.

Do the French subtitles follow French punctuation?

Yes. French puts a space before ?, !, : and ;, and the translation does: “Pouvez-vous m’envoyer le rapport avant vendredi ?” and “Waouh ! C’est incroyable !” came back that way in our test. Quotes take « », and “Dr. Patel” became “le Dr Patel”.

How are numbers and times written in French subtitles?

The French way. In our test, “6.5 percent” became “6,5 pour cent”, “$1,250” became “1 250 $”, and “October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.” became “le 16 octobre 2026 à 15h30”: decimal comma, a space between thousands and the 24-hour clock.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.
French subtitleLe prix a augmenté de 6,5 pour cent pour atteindre 1 250 $.
The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
French subtitleLa réunion aura lieu le 16 octobre 2026 à 15h30.
Can you send me the report before Friday?
French subtitlePouvez-vous m’envoyer le rapport avant vendredi ?

Will viewers be addressed as tu or vous?

As vous. English “you” came back as vous in every line of our test, even the casual “you know”, which became “vous savez”. That suits most videos; for a channel that talks to friends, change “vous” to “tu” where it should sound closer.

Will French subtitles fit on screen?

Yes. French usually runs longer than English, so the French is laid out as subtitles on its own terms: at most 2 lines of about 42 characters, each subtitle on screen for 1 to 7 seconds and long enough to read, starting when the English words are spoken.

Because the French is cut into subtitles after translation, its subtitles needn’t match the English ones one for one. In our test, 2 minutes 19 seconds of English became 34 English subtitles and, over two runs, 37 and 38 French ones, the French text running about a sixth longer.

FAQ

Questions about French subtitles for English videos

Is the English to French video translator free?

Yes. Translate 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark. French SRT and VTT, the English subtitles and the French text are all included.

Does it dub the video in French?

No. It makes French subtitles, not a French voice track, and it doesn’t change your video. Upload the French SRT next to the video, or burn it in with a video editor.

Is the French for France or for Canada?

It’s standard French that viewers in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada all read easily. Words that differ, such as courriel and e-mail, follow the translation’s choice, so check them for a Quebec audience.

How do I add the French subtitles on YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add French as a language, then upload the SRT file with timing. French-speaking viewers can then pick it from the subtitle menu.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser takes the sound out of the video on your device. Short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the English text to a cloud AI translation service; each discards what it was sent. The picture is never sent.

Can I get the English subtitles too?

Yes. Switch the result to Original and download the English SRT. Publishing both lets English and French viewers each choose their own.
