How it works

How do you add Japanese subtitles to an English video?

To translate an English video to Japanese, drop the video here. The browser takes out its sound, the English is transcribed and translated, and the Japanese is laid out as subtitles in the time each English sentence takes. Download the Japanese SRT and add it to your video or channel.

  1. 1

    Drop in the English video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM. Only the sound is used; the picture stays on your device.

  2. 2

    Japanese subtitles are built

Transcribed in English, translated, then cut into Japanese subtitles. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download SRT or VTT

The files end in .ja.srt or .ja.vtt. Switch to Original for the English subtitles with matching timing.

How do Japanese subtitles fit on the screen?

In short lines. A Japanese subtitle has at most 2 lines of about 16 characters, and stays up long enough to read at 9 characters a second. Japanese uses about half as many characters as English, but on screen it needs about a fifth more room.

Because the Japanese is laid out after it’s translated, its subtitles follow its own sentences, and needn’t match the English ones one for one. Each still appears while the English it translates is being spoken.

Can a Japanese subtitle line break in the middle of a word?

No. Japanese has no spaces, so the page asks the browser where its words begin and breaks only there, never in front of 。 or 、. In our check, the sentence about Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez became two subtitles with the names whole: “Dr. PatelとMaria Lopezが”, then “セッションを進行します。”.

Dates are worth a glance: the same check put “会議は2026年10月16” on one line and “日午後3時30分からです。” under it. Moving the 16 down a line in the SRT fixes that without touching the timing.

How do prices, dates and exclamations look in Japanese subtitles?

Japanese style with Arabic digits. In our test “October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.” became “2026年10月16日午後3時30分”, a 12-hour time marked 午後, and “Wow! That’s amazing!” became “わあ!それはすごいですね!” with full-width marks.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.
Japanese subtitle価格は6.5パーセント上昇し、$1,250になりました。
The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
Japanese subtitle会議は2026年10月16日午後3時30分からです。
Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session.
Japanese subtitleDr. PatelとMaria Lopezがセッションを進行します。
Wow! That’s amazing!
Japanese subtitleわあ!それはすごいですね!

Will Japanese viewers find the subtitles too formal?

They read politely, in です/ます forms, which suits tutorials, product videos and company channels. A casual vlog may sound stiff that way; changing the endings to plain forms in the SRT gives a friendlier voice without touching the timing.

In our test of 50 sentences, translation into Japanese scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Read the names and verb endings once before you upload.

Making videos for English and Japanese viewers?

On your Mac, NoteOwl understands Japanese as well as English. Import an MP4 and it writes an unlimited transcript, puts a name to each voice and exports SRT subtitles carrying those names. Got subtitles already? Their timing stays exact in the subtitle translator.

FAQ

Japanese subtitles for English videos: questions

Is the English to Japanese video translator free?

It is: 3 videos a day of up to 30 minutes, nothing to sign up for and nothing stamped on the picture. Both the Japanese and the English subtitle files are yours to download.

Does it dub the video into Japanese?

No. It makes Japanese subtitle files and leaves your video as it is. Upload the subtitles beside the video, or burn them in with an editor whose font has Japanese characters.

Where do Japanese subtitles go on YouTube?

YouTube Studio → Subtitles → your video → Add language → Japanese, then upload the .ja.srt as a file with timing. Japanese then shows up among the subtitle choices under the video.

Are the names in the subtitles written in katakana?

Not always. In our test, Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez stayed in Latin letters. If your Japanese viewers expect katakana, change the names in the SRT before you publish.

Can I keep an English subtitle track as well?

Yes: the Original switch shows the English subtitles, timed the same way, ready to save as SRT or VTT. Upload both and each viewer chooses.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. The browser pulls the sound out on your device. Brief pieces of it are transcribed by a cloud AI service, the English lines are translated by another, and neither keeps them. The picture is never sent anywhere.
