How it works
How do you get English subtitles for a German video?
To translate a German video to English, drop it on this page. The German speech is transcribed from the video’s sound, translated line by line, and set out as English subtitles that appear while the German is spoken. Save them as SRT or VTT.
- 1
Add the German video
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V or 3GP. Only the sound track is read.
- 2
Transcribed, translated, timed
German first, then English subtitles. Up to 30 minutes of each video.
- 3
Save the English
SRT or VTT; Original holds the German subtitles on the same timing.
Are English subtitles shorter than German ones?
In characters, yes. Across our German test recording, word counts barely changed but the characters dropped by roughly an eighth: one long German compound such as “Unabhängigkeitserklärung” is three short English words, “Declaration of Independence”.
That leaves English subtitles room to breathe: at most 2 lines of 42 characters, kept up long enough to read at about 17 characters a second.
How well is German speech recognised?
Very well. Our test rated the German transcription very clean and the English made from it strong. Names are the part to check, since they reach the subtitles spelled the way the German transcript heard them.
What happens to German abbreviations, times and figures?
They take English form. “z. B.” became “e.g.”, “Um genau 8:46 Uhr” became “At exactly 8:46 a.m.”, and “15 dieser Felsen” stayed in figures: “15 of these rocks”. Units such as “165 km/h” came through as written.
Do English subtitles follow the German sentence order?
No, they follow English. The translation is cut into subtitles afterwards, so a German clause that ends on its verb (“wo die Band vor einer ausverkauften Menge spielte”) appears as natural English: “where the band played for a sold-out crowd”.
Publishing videos in German?
NoteOwl understands German on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For German subtitles of the same speech, use the German subtitle generator.
FAQ
English subtitles for German videos: what people ask
Is the German to English video translator free?
It is: 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, without an account or a watermark. The English and the German subtitles both download.
Can I use the subtitles just to watch the video myself?
Yes. Download the English SRT and open it in your video player alongside the file; players such as VLC and IINA load SRT subtitles. Nothing is published unless you upload it.
Does it make an English voice track?
No. It produces subtitles only, and the video keeps its German sound.
How do I add the English subtitles to YouTube?
In YouTube Studio, choose the video, open Subtitles, add English as a language and upload the SRT with timing.
What if the speakers switch into English?
Everything is transcribed as German on this page. For a video in both languages, use the main video translator and leave the spoken language on Detect automatically.
What is sent from my device?
Short pieces of the video’s sound, to a cloud AI transcription service, and then the German text, to a cloud AI translation service. Each discards it after replying; the picture is never sent.
