How it works

How do you put English subtitles on a Russian video?

To translate a Russian video to English, drop the file here. The browser pulls out the sound, the Russian is transcribed and translated, and the English is laid out as subtitles timed to the speaker. Download the English SRT and open it with the video, or upload both.

  1. 1

    Add the Russian video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, from a phone, a course site or a screen recording.

  2. 2

    Russian in, English out

Transcribed in Russian, translated, then timed as subtitles. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download English subtitles

SRT or VTT. Switch to Original for Russian subtitles with the same timing.

How are the English subtitles timed and laid out?

Each English subtitle appears when the matching Russian words begin and stays up long enough to read at 17 characters a second, within 1 to 7 seconds. It holds at most 2 lines of up to 42 characters, broken between words.

The English is split into subtitles after it has been translated, so it follows English sentences rather than Russian ones, and the English subtitles needn’t match the Russian subtitles one for one.

How do Russian times and units appear in English subtitles?

The 24-hour clock stays: “Ровно в 08:46” became “Exactly at 08:46”. Units take English abbreviations: “165 км/ч” became “165 km/h” and “105 миль в час” “105 miles per hour”. For American viewers, change times to a.m. and p.m. if you like.

How well does Russian speech come through in English?

Well. Russian was transcribed very cleanly in our test, and whole Russian recordings translated into English rated good. Everyday sentences come back plain and close to the meaning, as in these test lines.

Обычно рыбы погибают из-за высокой концентрации токсических веществ в воде.
EnglishFish usually die due to high concentrations of toxic substances in the water.
Бразилец получил серьёзную травму головы после аварии на гран-при в Венгрии в 2009 году.
EnglishThe Brazilian suffered a serious head injury after a crash at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

What happens to names and brands in the subtitles?

Places and storms named in Cyrillic return to their English spelling: “Миссури” became “Missouri” and “урагана Фред” became “Hurricane Fred”. A brand the transcript wrote in Latin letters, such as “Six Flags St. Louis”, came through untouched. People’s names are spelled by sound, so check unusual ones.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Russian videos

Is the Russian to English video translator free?

Yes. Up to 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and nothing added to your video. The English and the Russian subtitle files are both yours to download.

Can I use it for a recorded lecture in Russian?

Yes. Drop the lecture video; a longer one is translated up to its first 30 minutes. Then play it with the English SRT loaded in your video player.

Does it translate Russian text that appears on screen?

No. Only what is said is transcribed; the picture is never read, so titles, slides and signs stay in Russian.

Can I download the Russian subtitles too?

Yes. Switch the result to Original and save the Russian SRT, timed the same way as the English.

Will it dub the video into English?

No. It writes English subtitles. The Russian voice and the video itself are not changed.

Is the video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser separates the sound on your device; short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Russian text to a cloud AI translation service, each of which discards what it was given. The picture is never sent.
