How it works

How do you get English subtitles for an Italian video?

To translate an Italian video to English, drop it on this page. Your browser takes out the sound, it is transcribed as Italian, each line goes into English, and the English is cut into subtitles at the times the Italian is spoken. Then download the SRT.

  1. 1

    Drop in the Italian video

An MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V or 3GP file; only the sound is read.

  2. 2

    English subtitles appear

Italian is transcribed and translated, then timed. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Save SRT or VTT

Or switch to Original for Italian subtitles on the same timeline.

Do English subtitles take less room than Italian ones?

Yes, a little. Across our Italian test recording, the English translation used about a tenth fewer characters and fewer words than the Italian transcript (926 against 1,008). Shorter text gives viewers English subtitles that are quick to read at Italian speaking speed.

Each English subtitle has at most 2 lines of up to 42 characters and stays up long enough to read at about 17 characters a second. Because the English is cut into subtitles after translating, the subtitles follow English sentences, not Italian ones.

How well is Italian speech understood?

Our test rated the Italian transcription very clean and the English made from it good. Names are the usual slip: they appear in the subtitles spelled the way the Italian transcript heard them, so check people and places before you publish.

What happens to Italian times and measurements in the subtitles?

They are kept as said. “Alle 8:46 precise” became “At exactly 8:46”, with no a.m. added, and “105 miglia all’ora (165 km/h)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”. Italian compass points turn into English ones: “nord-ovest” became “the northwest”.

Can I watch an Italian video with these English subtitles?

Yes. Save the English SRT next to the video with the same file name and players such as VLC load it by themselves; otherwise add it from the player’s subtitle menu. Each file can run up to 30 minutes, enough for a lesson, a vlog or a clip.

Recording or publishing in Italian?

NoteOwl understands Italian on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For Italian subtitles of the same speech, the Italian subtitle generator makes them.

FAQ

English subtitles for Italian videos: questions

Is the Italian to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, no account and no watermark; the English and the Italian subtitles both download.

Does it dub the video into English?

No. It writes English subtitles and leaves the video untouched; there is no English voice track.

Can I upload the English subtitles to YouTube?

Yes. In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Subtitles, add English and upload the SRT as a file with timing. Viewers can then turn English subtitles on.

What if someone in the video speaks English?

The page transcribes all the speech as Italian. For a video that mixes the two languages, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Are speaker names included?

No. The web subtitles carry the words only. NoteOwl on a Mac names each speaker in the SRT files it saves.

Is my video sent anywhere?

Only its sound, in short pieces, to a cloud AI transcription service, followed by the Italian text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard it after replying. The picture never leaves your device and NoteOwl stores nothing.
