How much room do English subtitles need for Portuguese speech?
Slightly less. Across our Portuguese test recording, the English translation had slightly fewer characters and words than the transcript (997 words against 1,043), so the English sits comfortably within each subtitle’s line limit.
Each subtitle has up to 2 lines of 42 characters and stays on screen long enough to read at about 17 characters a second, from the moment the Portuguese words begin.
How well does it understand Portuguese speech?
Strongly. Our test scored Portuguese speech into English strong, the highest of our three ratings, after a very clean transcription of a Brazilian recording. Names are what to check: they appear as the Portuguese transcript spelled them.
What do times and measurements look like in the English subtitles?
English-style. “Às 8:46 da manhã” became “At 8:46 a.m.”, and “105 milhas por hora (165 km por hora)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km per hour)”. Longer phrasing gets tightened: “move-se no sentido noroeste” became “is moving northwest”.
Should you publish the Portuguese subtitles too?
Often, yes. Switch the result to Original and you get Portuguese subtitles on the same timing. A channel can publish both tracks, so Portuguese speakers watching with the sound off and English speakers each pick their own.
Making videos in Portuguese?
NoteOwl understands Portuguese on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles naming each speaker. For Portuguese subtitles of the same speech, use the Portuguese subtitle generator.
FAQ
Portuguese videos with English subtitles: questions
Is the Portuguese to English video translator free?
Yes: 3 videos a day of up to 30 minutes each, no account, no watermark. English and Portuguese subtitles both download.
Does it translate videos from Portugal as well as Brazil?
Yes, the page transcribes any Portuguese speech. We measured it on a Brazilian recording, so for a video from Portugal give names and local words a quick look.
How do I put the English subtitles on YouTube?
Open YouTube Studio, pick the video, go to Subtitles and add English, then upload the SRT file with timing. The English track appears in the viewer’s subtitle menu.
Is the video dubbed into English?
No. The page writes English subtitles only; the original Portuguese sound and the video file are untouched.
What if the video switches to English?
This page transcribes everything as Portuguese. For a video in both languages, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
What leaves my device?
Only the sound, in short pieces, sent to a cloud AI transcription service, and then the Portuguese text, sent to a cloud AI translation service; each discards it after answering. The picture stays with you.
