How it works

How do you put French subtitles on a Spanish video?

To translate a Spanish video to French, drop it on this page. The Spanish is transcribed, each line is put into French, and the French is cut into subtitles on the Spanish timing. When it finishes, download the French SRT and add it to your player, editor or channel.

  1. 1

    Choose the Spanish video

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, 3GP or WebM. Your browser pulls out the sound; the picture stays on your computer.

  2. 2

    Spanish in, French out

The speech is written down as Spanish, then put into French, for up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Save the French SRT

Or VTT. The Spanish subtitles are one switch away, under Original.

Do French subtitles need more room than Spanish ones?

Hardly any. Across ten test sentences the French came to 1,057 characters against 1,062 in Spanish, so it fits the screen much as the Spanish would: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, each shown long enough to read at 17 characters a second.

The French is cut into subtitles after it is translated, so each subtitle holds a French phrase rather than a slice of the Spanish one. Laid out by the page’s rules, one test sentence became a single subtitle of two short lines: “Après le GP de Hongrie en 2009, / Piquet Jr. a été expulsé.”

How are times and speeds written in the French?

The French way. In our test, “8:46 a. m.” became “8h46” on the 24-hour clock, “105 millas por hora” became “105 miles par heure”, and the Brisbane Open turned into “l’Open de Brisbane”, in French word order.

105 millas por hora (165 km/h)
French subtitle105 miles par heure (165 km/h)

Which French words are worth a second look?

Words with a sharper French equivalent. In our test, “expulsaron” (he was let go) came back as the literal “a été expulsé”, where a French subtitler would write “limogé”. Skim job, sports and team words before you publish.

Some lines stay close to the Spanish without being wrong: “hace poco” became “il y a peu”, where the human French said “récemment”. Change those only where your viewers would notice.

Where do you upload French subtitles for a Spanish video?

Wherever the video lives. On YouTube, open YouTube Studio, choose Subtitles, add French and upload the SRT with timing. Players such as VLC load an SRT named like the video, and most editors import one.

Keep the Spanish SRT as well: with both on the video, each viewer picks the language they read.

FAQ

Questions about French subtitles for Spanish videos

Is the Spanish to French video translator free?

Yes: 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. The French SRT and VTT, the Spanish subtitles and a plain-text copy come with every video.

Does it record a French voice-over?

No. You get French subtitles, not dubbing, and your video file is never changed. Add the SRT as a subtitle track, or burn it into the picture with a video editor.

Can I get the Spanish subtitles too?

Yes. Switch the result to Original and download the Spanish SRT. Both files follow the same speech, so they can sit side by side on one video.

Does it handle Spanish from Spain and from Latin America?

Yes. The page listens for Spanish as one language, whichever country the speaker comes from. Our own test recording was Latin American Spanish, and it was transcribed very cleanly before any French was written.

Can I choose another language for the subtitles?

Yes. The page is set to Spanish speech and French subtitles, but the Translate into menu lists the other languages too, such as Portuguese, Italian or English.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser takes the sound out of the video on your device. Short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Spanish text to a cloud AI translation service; each discards what it gets, and the picture is never sent.
