How it works

How do you translate a Portuguese video into Spanish subtitles?

Drop the video on this page; it is set to Portuguese speech and Spanish subtitles. The Portuguese is transcribed, each line is translated, and the Spanish is laid out as subtitles at the moments the Portuguese is spoken. That is all it takes to translate a Portuguese video to Spanish.

  1. 1

    Pick the Portuguese video

A YouTube upload, a webinar, a family video: MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, 3GP or WebM.

  2. 2

    Let it listen

Portuguese is transcribed, then translated into Spanish. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Save the Spanish subtitles

Download SRT or VTT; the Portuguese subtitles are under Original.

Is Brazilian Portuguese speech picked up well?

Yes. Our Portuguese test recordings were Brazilian, and they were transcribed very cleanly. Since the Spanish is translated from that transcript, a clean Portuguese transcript is what keeps the Spanish subtitles close to what was said.

Why do the Spanish subtitles say “él” so often?

Because Portuguese often names the subject where Spanish leaves it out. “Ele recentemente perdeu…” became “Él perdió recientemente…”: correct, but a Spanish subtitler would usually drop the “Él”. Deleting it also frees a few characters on a crowded line.

Is the Spanish longer than the Portuguese?

A little. Ten Portuguese test sentences came to 1,027 characters; their Spanish to 1,068. The Spanish is laid out on its own, at most 2 lines of 42 characters a subtitle, read at 17 characters a second.

A typical result from our layout: “A las 8:46 de la mañana, / un silencio se apoderó de la ciudad,”: two balanced lines, broken after the comma.

How are numbers and measurements handled?

As the speaker said them. “105 milhas por hora (165 km por hora)” became “105 millas por hora (165 km por hora)”, with the kilometres spelled out as in the Portuguese, and “julho do ano passado” became “julio del año pasado”.

Words that differ between the two languages are swapped: the Brazilian “ônibus” came back as “autobús”, and “ingressos esgotados” as “entradas agotadas”. A channel for Mexico might prefer “boletos”; edit the SRT if so.

FAQ

Questions about Spanish subtitles for Portuguese videos

Is the Portuguese to Spanish video translator free?

Yes, for 3 videos a day of up to 30 minutes each. There is no account to make and no watermark on anything you download.

Do the subtitles say who is speaking?

No. The Spanish subtitles carry the words and their timing, not names. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker and can put their names in the SRT it saves.

Can I download the Portuguese subtitles as well?

Yes. Switch the result to Original and save the Portuguese SRT or VTT. It covers the same speech as the Spanish, so you can publish the two together.

Will it dub the video into Spanish?

No. The page writes Spanish subtitles only; no voice is generated and your video file is left untouched.

What leaves my computer?

Short pieces of the video’s sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Portuguese text to a cloud AI translation service; each discards what it was sent. The picture is never sent, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
