How it works

How do you transcribe French audio?

Choose your recording and the converter does the rest: it cuts the sound at pauses, transcribes each short piece as French and shows the text with its times as it arrives. When the last piece is in, copy the transcript or download it.

  1. 1

    Choose a recording

A mémo vocal from an iPhone, a WhatsApp voice note, a recorded cours or the MP4 of a Zoom call.

  2. 2

    See the French appear

Paragraph after paragraph, each one dated to the second. A file is transcribed up to 30 minutes; anything beyond is skipped.

  3. 3

    Export

Plain text, a Word document, or SRT and VTT subtitles.

Does it write French accents, cedillas and œ?

Yes. Our French test transcript used é, è, ê, à, â, ç, î, ô and û in the right places, the ligature in “œuvre”, and elisions such as “l’accident” and “qu’on”, so the text reads as normal written French.

It left out the punctuation French typography relies on, though: no « » guillemets, no semicolons and no colons appeared anywhere, and brackets were turned into commas. Add them where a quote or a list needs them.

Why does a French transcript need a careful read?

Because French spelling carries endings you can’t hear. Infinitive or imperative, singular or plural, masculine or feminine often sound identical, and the transcript sometimes picks the wrong one while still reading as correct French.

  • -er or -ez

“Résistez à la tentation” came back as “résister à la tentation”.

  • Agreement

“Danielle Lantagne, experte” became “Daniel Lantagne, expert”.

  • Silent plurals

“leurs proies” was written as “leur proie”.

  • Auxiliaries

“le score a atteint” lost its “a”: “le score atteint”.

How are numbers written in a French transcript?

Usually as digits, with a space between thousands as French does. The % sign came straight after the number, though French typography wants a space before it, and a few numbers stayed in words.

“dix-sept personnes”
Written“17 personnes”
“huit cent mille soldats”
Written“800 000 soldats”
“cent pour cent”
WrittenThe figure and the % sign, with no space
“soixante ans”

“dixième tempête”

Does it work for French from Quebec, Belgium or Africa?

It treats them all as French, since the page has a single French setting. Our tests used French from France. Belgian and Swiss speakers say septante and nonante, and Quebec has its own vocabulary, so read regional words and numbers closely.

A recording that switches between French and English for long passages, common in Montreal or Brussels offices, belongs on the main audio to text converter: it identifies the language of every piece separately.

Can NoteOwl transcribe French meetings on a Mac?

Yes. NoteOwl understands French from France and Canada and transcribes French recordings and meetings on your Mac with unlimited transcription, labels each speaker, keeps every conversation searchable and sends nothing online. Its free dictation types French wherever your cursor is.

FAQ

French audio to text: frequently asked

Is the French converter free?

Yes. Up to 3 French recordings a day, 30 minutes each, with no account; the transcript and every export are yours to keep.

Why use a page set to French rather than automatic detection?

A short or quiet piece can be mistaken for another language when the language is guessed, and then it comes back in the wrong spelling. Here the language is never guessed: every piece is transcribed as French.

Does it add guillemets and spaces before punctuation?

No. In our test the punctuation was limited to full stops, commas, apostrophes and hyphens: no « », no semicolons, no colons, and no space before %. If your document follows French typographic rules, add them while you proofread.

Is my French recording stored?

No. Short pieces of the audio are sent over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes them and keeps nothing. NoteOwl doesn’t save your recording or your transcript.

Can I create French subtitles?

Yes. Once the transcript is finished, download it as SRT or VTT; each subtitle has a start and end time and works in YouTube, Vimeo and video editors.

Which words does it get wrong most often?

Endings that sound alike, names and rare words. In our test “cérémonie” became “Céa Amani” and “rugissement” became “enregistrement”; both stand out on a read-through.
