How it works
How do you translate subtitles into French?
Add the SRT or VTT file; French is already the target. Translate sends the subtitle text in batches and brings it back in French, every subtitle keeping the moment it appears and disappears. Read through the French and download it.
- 1
Drop in the file
SRT or VTT in English or another language from the list. English files are detected for you.
- 2
Translate into French
Subtitles are sent in runs, so a sentence that straddles two of them is translated as one.
- 3
Download French subtitles
SRT, VTT, or a bilingual SRT with the original line above the French.
Does the translation add the space French puts before a question mark?
Yes. French writes “vendredi ?” and “Waouh !”, and the translation did so in our test. When a subtitle is laid out again, a lone ? or ! stays on the line with the word before it, so no line starts with a stray mark.
The same care applies to amounts: French writes “1 250 $” with a space between thousands, and the layout avoids breaking a line inside it. Lines aim for 42 characters and break between words, 2 lines at most.
Will the French use tu or vous?
Vous, throughout our test: “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “Pouvez-vous m’envoyer le rapport avant vendredi ?”, and “Please sit down, sir” became “Asseyez-vous, monsieur, s’il vous plaît”. For a family film or friends chatting, switch the lines that should say tu.
How are times and numbers written in French subtitles?
“6.5 percent” became “6,5 pour cent”, and “3:30 p.m.” became “15 h 30” on the 24-hour clock. Another run wrote “15h30”: both are used in France, so pick one and keep it the same across the whole file.

Does French keep track of who is a man or a woman?
When English says so. “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” became “Notre médecin a dit qu’elle rappellerait demain”: the “she” survived as “elle”. Groups take the masculine, as in “Merci à tous d’être venus aujourd’hui”. Check lines where English gave no clue.
Do French subtitles still fit when the text gets longer?
Yes. French runs about a tenth longer than English, but each subtitle keeps its original start and end and is laid out again in 2 lines at most. A longer translation fills those lines more fully instead of adding a subtitle.

FAQ
French subtitle translation: your questions
Can I translate subtitles to French without paying?
Yes. 3 subtitle files a day, each up to 30,000 characters of text, go into French free, with no account and no mark added to the file.
How good is the French?
In our test of translation from English, French scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Read it for tu or vous, the gender of people English didn’t describe, and names.
Is the French right for viewers in Quebec?
It’s international French, which Quebec viewers read without trouble. Quebec has its own words for some everyday things, and those follow the translation’s choice, so a channel aimed at Quebec may want to adjust a few.
Will the French subtitles line up with my video?
Yes. Your file’s numbering and every start and end time are kept, so the French plays at the same moments the original did.
Can I show the original and the French together?
Yes: the bilingual SRT has the original line above the French one in each subtitle. It suits French classes and anyone checking the translation against the source.
Is my subtitle file stored?
No. Your browser reads the file and sends only the subtitle text, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which translates it and keeps nothing. NoteOwl doesn’t store your file or the French.
