Ukrainian audio to text

Turn Ukrainian audio to text in Ukrainian spelling, not Russian: this converter is set to Ukrainian, so a нарада, a лекція or a голосове повідомлення comes back with і, ї, є and the apostrophe, timed paragraph by paragraph.

How it works

How do you transcribe Ukrainian audio?

Drop the recording into the converter. It is split at pauses into short pieces, each piece is transcribed as Ukrainian, and the Cyrillic text appears with its times as soon as it is ready. When it’s complete, copy the Ukrainian transcript or download it.

  1. 1

    Choose the file

A voice message from Telegram or Viber, a lecture on your phone, an M4A interview or a video recording.

  2. 2

    Watch the text arrive

Paragraphs appear with their start times. Up to 30 minutes of a file are transcribed.

  3. 3

    Export it

TXT, a Word file, or SRT and VTT subtitles in Ukrainian.

Does it write і, ї, є and the apostrophe?

Yes. In our Ukrainian test transcript, і, ї and є appeared almost exactly as often as in the original text, and the apostrophe was kept in “комп’ютера”, “здоров’я” and “об’єм”. The Russian-only letters ы, э, ъ and ё never appeared.

Why set the converter to Ukrainian instead of detecting it?

Because Ukrainian and Russian share many words, and a short piece is easy to take for Russian when the language is guessed. Fixed to Ukrainian, the transcript keeps Ukrainian spelling; in our test only one sentence slipped, writing “Архипелаг” and “остров” for “Архіпелаг” and “острів”.

Search a long transcript for и where you expect і, and for Russian word forms, especially in place names and technical terms.

How are numbers and dates written in Ukrainian?

Mostly as digits, with Ukrainian case endings attached by a hyphen: “10-й ураган”, “в 1889-му”. Units were written in full in one place (кілометрів) and abbreviated in another (км), and ten thousand came back as “10 тисяч”.

“дев’ятнадцять із поранених”
In the transcript“19 із поранених”
“десятий ураган”
In the transcript“10-й ураган”
A year with a case ending
In the transcript“в 1889-му”
Ten thousand years
In the transcript“10 тисяч років”
A distance in kilometres
In the transcript“120 кілометрів”

What about surzhyk and recordings with Russian in them?

The page writes every piece as Ukrainian, so it suits recordings in Ukrainian with the odd Russian word. When whole stretches are in Russian or English, use the main audio to text converter, which finds the language of each piece by itself.

Our tests used standard Ukrainian read aloud. Everyday surzhyk mixes Ukrainian and Russian within a sentence, so read a transcript of it with that in mind.

What should you proofread in a Ukrainian transcript?

The first sound of a sentence, names and the soft sign. In our test “Вчора” lost its first letter and became “Чора”, “Адміністрація” became “Міністрація”, and “льоду” lost its ь and became “люду”.

  • Names

President Martelly came out as “Мартелін”. Check every surname against the audio.

  • Look-alike words

“Ведення блогу” became “Введення блогу”, a real word with another meaning.

  • Punctuation

The transcript adds dashes and «» quotes in Ukrainian style, now and then where you may not want them.

FAQ

Questions about Ukrainian audio to text

Is the Ukrainian converter free?

Yes. The converter takes 3 Ukrainian recordings a day and transcribes up to 30 minutes of each, with no account. Every download format is included.

Will it mix in Russian letters?

Not in our test: ы, э, ъ and ё never appeared, and і, ї and є were in place. One sentence did use two Russian word forms, so a read-through is still worth it for long transcripts.

Is my recording sent anywhere?

Only short pieces of its sound, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service that writes them out and discards them. NoteOwl stores neither the audio nor the Ukrainian text.

Can I make Ukrainian subtitles?

Yes. After the transcript finishes, download SRT or VTT. The subtitles are in Cyrillic, each with its start and end time.

Does it write numbers in words or digits?

Mostly digits, with endings joined by a hyphen, as in “10-й” and “1889-му”. Kilometres appeared both in full and as км.

How accurate is it in Ukrainian?

A clear recording comes back almost word for word, in proper Ukrainian spelling. Names, the soft sign and the first letter of a sentence are where small slips appeared.
