How it works

How do you transcribe Norwegian audio?

Open the file in the converter. The browser cuts it into short pieces wherever there is a pause, each piece is transcribed as Norwegian, and paragraphs appear with their times as they finish. Then copy the Norwegian transcript or save it.

  1. 1

    Choose the recording

A taleopptak from your phone, a voice message, a recorded lecture or the MP4 of a Teams call.

  2. 2

    Let it write

Paragraphs show up in order with their start times. The converter takes up to 30 minutes from each file.

  3. 3

    Keep it

Copy the text, or download TXT, Word, SRT or VTT.

Does it write Bokmål or Nynorsk?

Our test recordings were read from Bokmål texts, and the transcript came back in Bokmål, with forms such as “havna” and “ga”. The page has a single Norwegian setting and no choice between the two standards, so check a transcript meant for Nynorsk.

Most Norwegians write Bokmål; Nynorsk is the other official standard, used especially in western Norway. The spoken language underneath is the same, and the differences are in spelling and word forms, such as ikke and ikkje.

Can it handle Norwegian dialects?

Norwegian has no official spoken standard, and most Norwegians speak their own dialect in every setting, at work included. The page treats every dialect as Norwegian; our tests used clear read speech, so try a short clip of a strong dialect before a long recording.

How do numbers and abbreviations come out?

Numbers usually as digits. Some phrases were shortened to their usual abbreviations (“ca. 800”, and “pga.” for “på grunn av”), others were written out in full, and fractions such as ¾ came back as garbled words.

“sju skip”
In the transcript“7 skip”
“ni medlemmer”

“på grunn av”
In the transcript“pga.”
A year after Christ
In the transcript“400 år etter Kristus”

Why fix the converter to Norwegian?

Because Swedish and Danish are close enough that a short Norwegian piece can be taken for either when the language is guessed. Fixed to Norwegian, every piece is spelled as Norwegian, even if a sentence sounds Swedish.

For a recording that changes language for whole sections, Norwegian and English say, the main audio to text converter works better, because it finds the language of each piece separately.

What should you check in a Norwegian transcript?

Double consonants, words that look Swedish, and stressed én. In our test “løveflokk” lost a k, “ballhåndtering” came back as the Swedish-looking “ballhantering”, and “Én bombe” lost the accent that marks it as one.

  • Split and joined words

“imidlertid” became “i midlertidig”, and “ulent terreng” became “ulenterreng”.

  • Sound-alikes

“kobber” turned into “kopper” and “oldtiden” into “altiden”.

  • Names

“Japans atombyrå” came out as “pansk atombyrå”; read names against the audio.

Can you transcribe Norwegian meetings on a Mac?

Yes, with NoteOwl, which understands Norwegian, Bokmål and Nynorsk, among the languages it transcribes on your Mac. It transcribes Norwegian recordings and meetings with unlimited transcription, labels each speaker and makes everything searchable, with no audio uploaded. Its dictation is free.

FAQ

Questions about Norwegian audio to text

Is the Norwegian converter free?

Yes. Each day you can transcribe 3 Norwegian files of up to 30 minutes, with no account and all downloads included.

Can I choose Nynorsk?

No, the page has one Norwegian setting. Our tests used Bokmål texts and got Bokmål back, so for a Nynorsk document, plan to adjust word forms such as ikke and ikkje while you proofread.

Will Swedish or Danish speakers be transcribed?

Everything on this page is written as Norwegian. For a recording in Swedish or Danish, use NoteOwl’s converter set to that language, or the main converter, which detects the language of each piece.

Where does my recording go?

Short pieces of its sound travel over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them. NoteOwl doesn’t keep the audio or the text.

Can I make Norwegian subtitles?

Yes. Download SRT or VTT once the transcript is complete; each line has a start and end time and keeps æ, ø and å.
