How it works

How do you transcribe Galician audio?

Select the file and the converter starts. It divides the recording at pauses into short pieces, writes each piece in Galician and builds the transcript paragraph by paragraph, each one timed, until the end.

  1. 1

    Select a Galician recording

A class, a podcast, a council meeting or a voice note, as audio or as video.

  2. 2

    Written in galego

Each piece is decoded as Galician, never guessed, up to 30 minutes into the file.

  3. 3

    Save the transcript

Copy it, or download Word, plain text, or SRT and VTT subtitles.

Why do Spanish or Portuguese spellings appear?

Because Galician sits between the two, and now and then a word came back in a neighbour’s spelling: oxígeno for osíxeno or conductores for condutores from Spanish, sem for sen or céu for ceo from Portuguese. Most of the text stayed in standard Galician.

The Portuguese forms are easy to find: few Galician words end in “m”, so a search for words ending in it turns up sem and com at once.

osíxeno, vexetación
Came back asoxígeno, vegetación (Spanish)
condutores, elixir
Came back asconductores, elegir (Spanish)
sen, con
Came back assem, com (Portuguese)
ceo, homes
Came back ascéu, homens (Portuguese)

Why is the language set to Galician?

To keep it from being guessed. Galician is close enough to Spanish and Portuguese that a piece could be written in either when the language is detected. Set to Galician, the transcript stays in galego, with only the occasional borrowed spelling.

If a conversation moves into Spanish for long stretches, as many in Galicia do, run it through the main converter, which detects each piece’s language and writes Spanish parts in Spanish.

How are Galician numbers written?

As figures: setenta e oito became 78 and catro became 4. Thousands take a full stop (30.000), and decades said as “os anos 20” keep their digits.

What should you check before you use the text?

Names, sentence ends and quotations. Foreign names are spelled by ear: Aerosmith came back as Aero Smith and one English hospital name as Edinburgh. Some pieces end without a full stop, and quotation marks and brackets are left out.

Does NoteOwl on a Mac understand Galician?

Not Galician, so this page is the place for it. NoteOwl on a Mac understands 34 languages, Spanish and Portuguese among them, and transcribes recordings and meetings in those with unlimited transcription, labelling the speakers and keeping everything on your Mac.

FAQ

Questions about Galician audio to text

Is the Galician converter free?

Yes. 3 Galician recordings a day, the first 30 minutes of each, with no account and every download format included.

Is my Galician recording stored?

No. Your browser sends short pieces of the sound, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which writes each one out and discards it. NoteOwl stores neither the audio nor the transcript.

Which Galician spelling does it use?

The standard spelling of the Real Academia Galega, with x, ñ and its accents, apart from the odd word that slips into a Spanish or Portuguese form.

Can I subtitle a Galician video?

Yes. Drop the MP4 or MOV in and download SRT or VTT, where every line has its start and end time. Fix any borrowed spellings first.

Can it translate Galician into Spanish or English?

No. It writes the Galician that was spoken. Paste the transcript into a translator for another language, and keep the original with its times to check against the audio.
