Galician subtitle generator

This Galician subtitle generator writes subtitles for a video spoken in Galician: the language is set to Galician, so the subtitles follow Galician spelling, with ñ and every accent, and download as SRT or VTT, timed to the speaker.

How it works

How do you make Galician subtitles for a video?

Drop the video here. Its sound is transcribed as Galician in short pieces and laid out as subtitles of one or two lines that keep time with the speech. Check them in the preview, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Choose a video

A class, a talk, a vlog or a council session: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or just the audio.

  2. 2

    Subtitles in Galician

Each piece is written in Galician, up to 30 minutes into the video.

  3. 3

    Download

SRT for YouTube and editors, VTT for a web player, or plain text.

How are Galician subtitles laid out?

In one or two lines of up to 42 characters, broken after a comma or between phrases, never in the middle of a word. Each subtitle starts with its first word and ends at a full stop, a comma or a pause.

Our 40 Galician test sentences became 99 subtitles, mostly two lines of about 30 characters.

With ñ
Its two linesO máis coñecido deses períodos / foi a época dos Tres Reinos,
A comma pause
Its two linesde romper contra a praia, xeralmente / contra un arrecife ou similar.
Accents
Its two linesviaxar por múltiples países / suporía ter que solicitar

Which spellings should you correct in Galician subtitles?

The few that drift toward Spanish or Portuguese. Galician sits between the two, and some words came back in a neighbour’s spelling: conjuntamente for conxuntamente, proyectanse for proxéctanse, proibida for prohibida.

  • Spanish j and y

Look for j or y where Galician writes x, as in conjuntamente and proyectanse.

  • Spanish words

árboles and estructuras came back for árbores and estruturas.

  • Portuguese forms

instalaron-se and cerimónia came back for instaláronse and cerimonia.

Why set the subtitle language to Galician?

Because a guessed language can take Galician for Spanish or Portuguese and subtitle a whole stretch in one of them. Set to Galician, every subtitle is written as Galician, and only a handful of words lean toward the neighbours.

For a video where people move between Galician and Spanish sentence by sentence, use the main subtitle generator, which detects each stretch’s language.

Are names correct in Galician subtitles?

Usually, but not always. A hospital in Cambridge, Addenbrooke’s, came back as “Edinburgh Hospital”, a real place name in the wrong place, and Aerosmith came back as two words. Compare every name with the video before you publish.

Does NoteOwl make subtitles on a Mac?

Yes, for English and the other languages it understands; Galician is not one of them. NoteOwl transcribes recordings on your Mac with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles naming each speaker. For Galician, keep to this page or Galician audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about Galician subtitles

Is the Galician subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 Galician videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark.

Can it make Spanish subtitles from Galician speech?

No. It writes the Galician that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Translate the SRT’s text if you need Spanish or English, and keep its numbers and times.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. Your browser opens it on your device and takes out the sound; short pieces of that sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards each one. NoteOwl stores neither video nor subtitles.

How do I correct a word?

Open the SRT or VTT in a text editor, change the word to its Galician spelling and save as UTF-8. Leave the numbers, times and blank lines unchanged.

Can the subtitles go inside the picture?

Not from this page, which makes subtitle files. Burn the SRT in with a video editor on export, or upload it with the video so viewers can turn it on.
