Russian audio to text

This free converter turns Russian audio to text in Cyrillic. It is set to Russian from the start, so a лекция, an интервью or a voice message is written in Russian spelling, with a time against every paragraph.

How it works

How do you transcribe Russian audio?

Drag the recording onto the page. It is read in your browser and divided at pauses into short pieces, each transcribed in Russian; the Cyrillic text appears with its times as soon as each piece is ready. Copy it or download it at the end.

  1. 1

    Drop in the recording

A голосовое from Telegram, a lecture recorded on a phone, an MP3 interview or a video file.

  2. 2

    Read along in Cyrillic

The paragraphs appear in order, each starting with its time. Recordings are transcribed up to 30 minutes each.

  3. 3

    Download

A .txt or .docx document, or SRT and VTT subtitles in Russian.

Does the Russian transcript use ё?

No. Our Russian test transcript wrote е everywhere ё was spoken: “актеры”, “ученые”, “Землей”, “передается”. That is how most printed Russian is set, but if your text must use ё, in a dictionary entry or a children’s book, add it by hand.

Search the transcript for words where ё changes the meaning, such as все and всё, since the spelling alone won’t tell a reader which one was said.

How does Russian punctuation and numbering come out?

Close to Russian print conventions. The transcript used «ёлочки» quotation marks where the original text had straight quotes, a dash between subject and predicate (“Долина – главное направление”), and Roman numerals for centuries.

Why fix the converter to Russian?

Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian share much of their vocabulary and sound alike in short phrases. When the language is guessed, a brief piece can be labelled as a neighbour and spelled with the wrong letters. Fixed to Russian, every piece is written in Russian spelling.

If the recording moves between Russian and another language for whole sections, use the main audio to text converter instead: it identifies the language of every piece.

What happens to foreign names and English words?

Most are written in Cyrillic by sound, and some come out a letter off. In our test “Wild Card” became “вилдкарт”, the governor Куомо became “Куома” and the Кочамо valley became “Качама”. Brand names may stay in Latin letters, as “ASUS” did.

Read every name, title and brand in a Russian transcript against the recording before you quote it.

Need Russian transcripts on your Mac every day?

NoteOwl understands Russian on your Mac and transcribes Russian recordings and meetings there with unlimited transcription. Every speaker gets a label, every conversation can be searched, and nothing is uploaded; free dictation types Russian into any app.

FAQ

Russian audio to text: questions

How much Russian audio can I transcribe free?

Up to 3 recordings a day, and up to 30 minutes of each, with no account to create. All four download formats are included.

Will it write Ukrainian words in a Russian recording correctly?

It writes everything as Russian, because the page is fixed to Russian. For a recording that is partly in Ukrainian, use NoteOwl’s Ukrainian page or the main converter, which detects the language of each piece by itself.

Is my Russian recording stored anywhere?

No. Short pieces of the sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes them and discards them. NoteOwl keeps no audio and no transcript; the text exists only in your open page.

Can I get Russian subtitles from a video?

Yes. Drop in the video, wait for the transcript and download SRT or VTT. The subtitles are in Cyrillic, each with a start and end time.

Does it write numbers as words or digits?

Mostly as digits: years, ages and ranges such as “150-200” came back as figures, and centuries as Roman numerals with “до н.э.”. Clock times appeared as plain hours, “между 10 и 11 вечера”.

How accurate is it for Russian?

Clear speech comes back almost word for word and fully punctuated. Foreign names and unusual words are the likeliest mistakes, and ё is always written as е.
