How it works

How do you translate an English recording into Catalan?

To translate English audio to Catalan, drop the recording here; the page is set to English speech and Catalan text. The speech is written down in short pieces, then each line is translated and keeps its time. Read the Catalan, check it against the English, and download.

  1. 1

    Add the English recording

MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG: a guest lecture, a podcast, an interview or a voice message.

  2. 2

    English, then Catalan

Transcribed as English, then translated, for the first 30 minutes of each file.

  3. 3

    Download the Catalan

Copy it or save text or Word; the English transcript sits under Original.

What can you do with the Catalan transcript?

Quote it, file it or hand it to a reader who prefers Catalan. Each paragraph carries the time it was said, and the Word download is headed “Translated: English → Catalan”, so a quote can always be traced back to the English and the recording.

Will the Catalan use tu or vostè?

Tu for everyday lines and vostè with “sir”, as the English suggests: “Can you send me the report before Friday?” became “Em pots enviar l’informe abans de divendres?”. The vostè line came out in an unusual verb form, so read formal passages closely.

What should you check in the Catalan?

Gender, titles and Spanish spellings. “Our doctor said she…” kept the woman (“La nostra doctora”), but “Dr. Patel” also became a woman, “La Dra. Patel”, and “dirigirán” arrived with a Spanish accent. A word misheard in English stays misheard in Catalan.

Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow.
CatalanLa nostra doctora va dir que tornaria a trucar demà.
The teachers were tired after the trip.
CatalanEls professors estaven cansats després del viatge.
Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session.
CatalanLa Dra. Patel i Maria Lopez dirigirán la sessió.

Does it write natural Catalan?

Yes: in our test, translation from English into Catalan scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. It uses the Catalan past with va (“va dir”, she said), Catalan words such as trucar for “call”, and apostrophes such as l’informe.

Catalan ran about a tenth longer than English in that test, so a translated transcript is a little longer than its original.

Recording in English or Spanish?

NoteOwl understands English and Spanish on your Mac, though not Catalan: it transcribes recordings and meetings with unlimited transcription, labels each speaker and keeps them searchable. For English speech as English text, use audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about translating English audio into Catalan

Is the English to Catalan audio translator free?

Yes. 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account; the Catalan, the English transcript and every download are included.

Can I download the Catalan as a Word document?

Yes. It opens with the recording’s length, the date and “Translated: English → Catalan”, then the Catalan paragraphs with their times, which you can turn off.

Is the Catalan suitable for Valencian readers?

It’s standard Catalan, which readers in Valencia and the Balearic Islands also read. Adjust forms by hand if the document must follow Valencian usage.

What if part of the recording is in Spanish or Catalan?

This page writes every part as English first. For a recording that switches languages, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Does it name the speakers?

No. The Catalan transcript has times and words only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels speakers in its own transcripts.

Is my recording uploaded?

The file stays in your browser. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English text to a cloud AI translation service, each discarding what it was sent; NoteOwl stores nothing.
