How it works

How do you add Catalan subtitles to an English video?

To translate an English video to Catalan, drop it on this page. The English speech is transcribed, each line is put into Catalan, and the Catalan is laid out as subtitles that start when the English words do. Download the SRT or VTT for your player or channel.

  1. 1

    Drop the English video in

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM. Only its sound is read, in your browser.

  2. 2

    Catalan subtitles are laid out

Transcribed, translated and timed, for the first 30 minutes of the video.

  3. 3

    Download

Catalan SRT or VTT; switch to Original for the English subtitles.

Do the Catalan subtitles add ¿ and ¡?

No. Catalan ends a question or an exclamation with the mark alone, and the translation did too: “Wow! That’s amazing!” became “Wow! Això és increïble!”. Viewers used to Spanish subtitles will notice the difference; it is the Catalan norm.

How are numbers and times shown in Catalan subtitles?

The Catalan way: “6.5 percent to $1,250” became “6,5 per cent fins als 1.250 $”, with a decimal comma and the dollar sign after the number, and 3:30 p.m. became “a les 15:30 h”, on the 24-hour clock with an h.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

Thank you all for coming today.

Will Catalan subtitles fit the screen?

Yes. Catalan ran about a tenth longer than English in our test, so it is laid out after translating: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, each subtitle up for 1 to 7 seconds. A longer Catalan passage can take an extra subtitle rather than a cramped one.

The line breaks avoid leaving “i” or a short word such as “de” at the end of a line, and words joined by an apostrophe, like d’octubre, always stay together.

How do the subtitles address viewers?

As a group, where the English speaks to everyone: “Well, you know” became “Doncs, ja sabeu”, with the plural vosaltres, which fits a presenter talking to an audience. One-to-one lines used tu, and “sir” brought in vostè.

How did English to Catalan do in our test?

The translation into Catalan scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Before publishing, check titles and genders on screen: one test line turned Dr. Patel into “la Dra. Patel”.

Publishing in English or Spanish as well?

NoteOwl understands English and Spanish on your Mac, though not Catalan: it imports MP4 video, transcribes it with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with speaker names. With English subtitles in hand, translate them into Catalan and keep their timing.

FAQ

Questions about Catalan subtitles for English videos

Is the English to Catalan video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, the first 30 minutes of each, without an account or a watermark; the Catalan and English subtitles are both included.

Does it dub the video into Catalan?

No. It makes Catalan subtitles and leaves the video and its sound alone. Upload the SRT with the video, or burn it in using an editor.

Can I publish English and Catalan subtitles together?

Yes. Download the Catalan, then switch to Original for the English; upload both as separate tracks so viewers pick their language.

Is it Catalan as written in Valencia too?

The subtitles use standard Catalan, read across Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. For a Valencian channel, adjust forms in the SRT where you prefer Valencian usage.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser takes the sound out of the video; short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English text to a cloud AI translation service, each discarding what it was sent. The picture never leaves your device.

Are speakers named in the subtitles?

No. The subtitles show only what was said, with no names.
