How it works

How do you translate an English recording into Hebrew?

To translate English audio to Hebrew, drop the recording on this page. The English is transcribed in short pieces, every line is translated into Hebrew, and each keeps the time it was said. Read the Hebrew, check a line against the English if needed, then copy or download it.

  1. 1

    Drop in the English audio

A lecture, a podcast, a webinar or an interview, as MP3, M4A, WAV or another audio file.

  2. 2

    Transcribed, then translated

English is written down first, then put into Hebrew. Up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Take the Hebrew with you

Copy it, or save it as text or a Word file; Original shows the English.

Does the Hebrew Word file read right to left?

Yes. Each Hebrew paragraph in the Word download is set as a right-to-left paragraph, so Word lines it up from the right with punctuation in place. The file opens with the recording’s length, “Translated: English → Hebrew” and the date.

Hebrew came out about a quarter shorter than the English it translated in our test, so the Hebrew transcript is usually the shorter of the two.

Who is “you” in the Hebrew transcript?

Usually a man. Hebrew has no neutral singular “you”, and our test chose the masculine: “Well, you know” became “נו, אתה יודע”. A group was handled correctly: “Thank you all for coming today” became “תודה לכולכם שהגעתם היום”. Check lines spoken to a woman.

Does the Hebrew keep a woman as a woman?

When the English says so. “Our doctor said she would call back tomorrow” became “הרופאה שלנו אמרה שהיא תחזור להתקשר מחר”, with the feminine doctor and verb. When English is silent, Hebrew uses the masculine: “The teachers” became “המורים”.

How are English names written in Hebrew?

In Hebrew letters. “Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez” became “ד״ר פטל ומריה לופז”. That reads naturally, but the original spelling is gone, so when you quote someone or need to search for a name, take it from the English transcript.

In our test, translation from English into Hebrew was level with the dedicated translation system we compared it with. A word the English transcript misheard is translated as misheard, so names and figures are worth a glance in both transcripts.

FAQ

Questions about English to Hebrew audio translation

Is the English to Hebrew audio translator free?

Yes: 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes each, with no account. The Hebrew transcript, the English one and every download are included.

Is the Hebrew written with vowel points?

No. The translation is in ordinary Hebrew without niqqud, the way newspapers, emails and most documents are written.

Will it speak the Hebrew?

No. It produces Hebrew text, a Word document or subtitles, not a Hebrew audio track.

What if some of the speakers use Hebrew?

This page transcribes all of the speech as English. For a recording that goes back and forth between English and Hebrew, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Does the Hebrew transcript show who spoke?

No. It shows words and times without speaker names. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in its own transcripts.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The file stays with you; short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the English transcript to a cloud AI translation service, each of which discards what it gets. NoteOwl stores nothing.
