How it works

How do you get a Catalan transcript of a Spanish recording?

Drop the recording here to translate Spanish audio to Catalan. The page listens for Spanish only, transcribes it in short pieces, then translates the lines in batches; the Catalan keeps the time of every line. Switch to Original whenever you want the Spanish words.

  1. 1

    Add the Spanish audio

A council meeting, a lecture, an interview or a voice message: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG.

  2. 2

    Spanish text, then Catalan

The speech is written in Spanish and translated into Catalan. Up to 30 minutes per recording.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

The Catalan as text or a Word document; the Spanish transcript separately.

Does the Catalan use its own past tense?

Yes. Spanish “Fue derrotado” came back as “Va ser derrotat”: Catalan builds its everyday past with va plus the infinitive, which looks like the Spanish “va a” future but means something already done. Our test lines used it throughout, as Catalan does.

Does Spanish creep into the Catalan?

Now and then, because the languages are so close. Our test kept the Spanish “a. m.” in “a les 8:46 a. m.”, wrote “ocurrida” where Catalan says “ocorreguda”, and copied the Spanish order in “l’avió primer” (Catalan: el primer avió).

From English, the same thing happened once: a Spanish accent in “dirigirán”, which Catalan writes dirigiran. So read the Catalan for forms that look Spanish, the way an editor in Barcelona would.

Plenty came out as Catalan, not Spanish: country names took their articles, “la Xina, l’Europa de l’Est i el Brasil”, and “un traumatismo agudo en su cabeza” became “un traumatisme agut al cap”.

Does usted become vostè?

That’s the match: vostè is Catalan’s polite “you”, tu the familiar one, vosaltres the plural. From English, our Catalan used all three: tu in a question, vosaltres in “ja sabeu”, vostè with “sir”, though that polite line came back as “assegüsi’s”, an odd spelling.

How does the Catalan write numbers and times?

The Catalan way, in our English test lines: “6,5 per cent”, “1.250 $” with the sign after the amount, and “a les 15:30 h” on the 24-hour clock. Spanish transcripts already use the decimal comma, so a figure like 6,5 carries over as it is.

How was Spanish to Catalan translation tested?

With ten Spanish sentences from a public test set, each beside a professional Catalan translation. The Catalan was clear and about as long as the Spanish, with the few Spanish traces described above.

Does NoteOwl on a Mac work in Catalan?

Not in Catalan; use this page for that. NoteOwl on a Mac does understand Spanish, and transcribes Spanish recordings and meetings with unlimited transcription, every speaker labelled. For a Spanish transcript without translation, use Spanish audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about translating Spanish audio into Catalan

Is the Spanish to Catalan audio translator free?

Yes. Translate 3 recordings a day, up to 30 minutes each, without signing up. The Catalan, the Spanish and every download are included.

Can I translate a meeting where people switch between Spanish and Catalan?

Not on this page, which writes everything down as Spanish. Use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically, so each piece is heard in its own language.

Can I get the Catalan as a Word document?

Yes. The Word file opens with the length of the recording and “Translated: Spanish → Catalan”, then the Catalan paragraphs with their times.

Will it read the Catalan aloud?

No. It gives you Catalan text to read, copy or download, not a recording.

Does it label the speakers?

No. The transcript has words and times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels speakers in Spanish recordings.

Is the recording stored anywhere?

No. Your browser sends short pieces of the sound to a cloud AI transcription service and the Spanish text to a cloud AI translation service, and each discards it. NoteOwl keeps nothing.
