How it works

How do you make Croatian subtitles for a video?

Choose the video and the page does the rest: it pulls out the sound, has it transcribed in Croatian a few seconds at a time and turns the words into numbered titlovi, each shown as its phrase is said. Review them, then save SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Add a video

A predavanje, a vlog, an interview or a clip from your phone; the audio alone works too.

  2. 2

    Check the titlovi

Each subtitle is listed with its number, times and lines. The first 30 minutes of a video are subtitled.

  3. 3

    Save

SRT for YouTube and editing software, or VTT for the player on your own site.

Why set the subtitles to Croatian?

Because Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are close enough that a short stretch whose language is guessed may come back with another standard’s word forms, or in Cyrillic. Set to Croatian, every subtitle is written in Croatian, in Latin script.

A video in which people switch to English for whole passages is better handled by the main subtitle generator, which detects the language of each passage itself.

What happens to the full stop after a Croatian year?

It stays, and the year stays with the word after it. Croatian writes “2005. godine” and “u 3. stoljeću”, and a full stop followed by a lowercase word isn’t taken as a sentence end, so in our test “2005. godine” opened a subtitle together.

Years written with a full stop, such as “2011.”. The generator keeps the year in its sentence and moves a one-letter word like “a” down to the next line: “Gradnja je dovršena u kolovozu 2011.” above “a Most je otvoren za promet u ožujku 2017.”

How are numbers written in Croatian subtitles?

With a decimal comma, as in “magnitude 6,5”, and a full stop after years and ordinals, as in “u 3. stoljeću”. Large numbers came back with a full stop too (“10.000 godina”), where Netflix’s Croatian guide wants a space: “10 000”.

The same guide leaves numbers up to 9999 without any separator, writes dates as “20.2.2004.” and spells out one to ten. Change those in the SRT if you follow it; the timing lines stay as they are.

How do Croatian subtitles mark two speakers and quotes?

With a hyphen and no space at the start of each speaker’s line, “-I što?” over “-Pričekaj. Daj mi trenutak.”, and „ ” quotation marks, in Netflix’s Croatian guide. The web generator writes the spoken words only, so add the hyphens yourself.

Its length and speed limits are this page’s too: 42 characters a line and 17 a second for adults. In Croatia, as across the Balkans, films and series for adults are generally subtitled; dubbing is mostly for children’s programmes.

Croatian subtitles with speaker names, on a Mac?

Croatian is one of the languages NoteOwl understands on your Mac. It transcribes Croatian recordings there with unlimited transcription, recognises each speaker and saves SRT subtitles with their names. For a Croatian transcript instead of subtitles, use Croatian audio to text.

FAQ

Croatian titlovi: questions

Is the Croatian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 Croatian videos a day, 30 minutes of each at most, with no account and no watermark, and download SRT, VTT or text.

Can it make Croatian subtitles for an English video?

No, it only writes down Croatian speech; translation isn’t part of it. For an English video, make English subtitles first, then translate their text line by line and leave the timings alone.

Will č, ć and đ show correctly?

They will in any program that reads UTF-8, which the subtitle files use. Wrong letters in a player mean it guessed another encoding, such as Windows-1250; pick UTF-8 when you open the file.

Can I use it for a video in Serbian or Bosnian?

This page writes everything as Croatian, in Croatian spelling. For a video in Bosnian, the Bosnian page keeps Bosnian forms; a video that mixes languages belongs on the main generator.

Where does my video go?

Nowhere: your browser reads it and it stays on your device. The sound travels in short pieces, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each piece and throws it away; NoteOwl keeps no copy.
