How it works

How do you make Bulgarian subtitles for a video?

Drop the video on this page. The sound is transcribed as Bulgarian piece by piece, and the Cyrillic text is laid out as subtitles of one or two lines that appear as the words are said. Check them, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Load the video

An interview, a lesson, a vlog or a talk: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or only the audio.

  2. 2

    Subtitles in Cyrillic

Every piece is written as Bulgarian, for up to 30 minutes of the video.

  3. 3

    Download the file

SRT for YouTube and editors, VTT for a web player, or plain text.

How are Bulgarian subtitles laid out?

As one or two lines of up to 42 characters, broken after a comma or between phrases, never inside a word. A new subtitle starts after a full stop, a comma or a pause rather than at a fixed length.

Every Bulgarian test sentence came back with its full stop, and about half of the 99 subtitles they made close on the end of a sentence.

A comma mid-sentence
Its two linesНе забравяйте, че има много / елементи в периодичната таблица.
Two clauses
Its two linesВсъщност, изобщо не е лесно да се намери, / дори и да се знае, че съществува.
A short pair
Its two linesСателитът беше изпратен / в космоса от ракета.

What do quotation marks and Latin words look like in Bulgarian subtitles?

The „ “ quotation marks and brackets are left out, so a quoted word comes back bare. Latin words keep their Latin letters inside the Cyrillic line, as civilis did, and numbers keep their endings, as in 20-те години and 20-ти век.

Why set the subtitle language to Bulgarian?

So every subtitle is in Bulgarian Cyrillic. Russian and Macedonian are written in Cyrillic too, and a guessed language can write a short stretch in the wrong one. Even set to Bulgarian, one Russian spelling slipped in: обстоятельства for обстоятелства.

For a video that switches between Bulgarian and English sentences, use the main subtitle generator, which works out the language of each stretch.

What should you check in Bulgarian subtitles?

Names first: foreign ones are written in Cyrillic by ear and can drift, as Вила Лас Естрелас did, coming back as Вюа-Ао-Естрелаз. Then look for words that sound like others, and put back any quotation marks you need.

  • Place names

King George Island, Остров Крал Джордж, came back as Крао Джордж.

  • Sound-alikes

динозаври once came back as джинозаври, and Думата as Номата.

  • Quotes

Add „ “ around titles and quoted words before you publish.

FAQ

Questions about Bulgarian subtitles

Is the Bulgarian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle up to 3 Bulgarian videos a day, the first 30 minutes of each, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Can it make English subtitles for a Bulgarian video?

No. It writes down the Bulgarian that is spoken and doesn’t translate it. For English, translate the SRT’s text and keep its numbers and times exactly as they are.

Will the Cyrillic open correctly in other apps?

Yes, the files are saved as UTF-8, so the Cyrillic stays intact when you open, edit or upload them. Save as UTF-8 again after any edit.

What happens to my video?

It stays on your device: your browser opens it there and takes out its sound. Short pieces of the sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each and discards it. NoteOwl stores nothing.

Can it burn subtitles into the video?

No. It makes an SRT or VTT file. Add the file where you publish the video, or burn it in with a video editor when you export.

Do the subtitles name the speakers?

No, only the words are written. NoteOwl on a Mac names each speaker in the SRT files it saves.
