How it works

How do you put English subtitles into Croatian?

Open the English SRT or VTT here; Croatian is already chosen as the target. Press Translate: the text goes out in batches of neighbouring subtitles and comes back in Croatian, and each subtitle is rebuilt at its old start and end time. Look it over, then save.

  1. 1

    Open your subtitle file

SRT or VTT, in English or any language in the From list. Leave From on Detect automatically if you aren’t sure.

  2. 2

    Translate into Croatian

Neighbouring subtitles travel together, so a sentence split across two of them keeps its sense in Croatian.

  3. 3

    Save it as .hr.srt

The download keeps your file’s name with the Croatian code added, such as Film.hr.srt. VTT and bilingual SRT too.

Will Croatian subtitles fit the same timing as English?

Usually, yes. In our test, Croatian translations came out about as long as the English sentences they replaced. Each subtitle keeps its time and is laid out again in at most 2 lines; a longer one gets fuller lines, never a third line.

Lines aim for 42 characters and break between words. The layout avoids ending a line on a one-letter word such as “i”, “u” or “s”, which Croatian subtitlers carry down to the next line, and avoids parting a day such as “16.” from the month after it.

Will viewers be addressed as ti or vi?

As vi. Every line of our English test came back in the polite plural: “Možete li mi poslati izvještaj prije petka?”, “Pa, znate…”, “Molim sjednite, gospodine”. That suits interviews, courses and company videos; for a vlog or a children’s film, change the verbs to ti.

How do dates, times and prices look in Croatian subtitles?

Croatian style. “October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.” became “16. listopada 2026. u 15:30 sati”: the Croatian month name, a full stop after the day and the year, the 24-hour clock. “6.5 percent to $1,250” became “6,5 posto na 1.250 dolara”.

Croatian names the months its own way: listopad for October, srpanj for July. The Bosnian target wrote “16. oktobra” for the same date, so the month is the first word a viewer in Sarajevo would notice.

The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.

Croatian subtitleVau! To je nevjerojatno!

Does the Croatian translation get gender right?

Not always, so look for it. “Our doctor said she would call back” came back as “Naš liječnik je rekao”: a masculine noun and verb, the woman lost. A mixed group takes the masculine plural, as Croatian grammar does: “Učitelji su bili umorni”.

Where only “she” told the English viewer who was meant, search the downloaded file for the past-tense ending (rekao or rekla) and the noun (liječnik or liječnica, profesor or profesorica), and correct the pair together.

FAQ

Croatian subtitle translation: questions

Is it free to translate subtitles to Croatian?

Yes. Up to 3 files a day, each with up to 30,000 characters of subtitle text, without an account and without a watermark.

Will the result be Croatian rather than Bosnian or Serbian?

Yes. Our test lines came back in standard Croatian, with listopad for October and nevjerojatno for amazing, where the Bosnian target wrote oktobar and nevjerovatno. Pick Bosnian under Into if that is your audience.

How good is translation into Croatian?

In our test of 50 sentences, translation from English into Croatian scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. The things worth a look before publishing are gender, ti or vi, and names.

Will the Croatian subtitles stay in sync with the video?

Yes. Start and end times and subtitle numbers are copied from your file unchanged, so the Croatian appears exactly where the original did.

Can I keep the original line above the Croatian?

Download the bilingual SRT: each subtitle carries the original line with the Croatian beneath it, at one time. It helps people learning Croatian, and a native speaker checking the translation.

Is my subtitle file uploaded?

The file is opened by your browser. Only the subtitle text leaves it, in batches, for a cloud AI translation service that translates it and then discards it. NoteOwl keeps no copy of either file.
