Czech subtitle generator

This Czech subtitle generator writes titulky for a video spoken in Czech: ř, ů, ě and every other háček and čárka in place, one-letter words such as v or s steered away from the end of a line, and each subtitle timed to the voice, as SRT or VTT.

How it works

How do you make Czech subtitles for a video?

Drop the video on the page. Its sound is transcribed in Czech a short stretch at a time, and the words are laid out as titulky of one or two lines that appear as they are spoken. Check them in the preview, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Choose a video

A přednáška, a vlog, a rozhovor or a webinar; the soundtrack alone works too.

  2. 2

    Check the titulky

Each subtitle is shown with its number, times and lines. The first 30 minutes of every video are subtitled.

  3. 3

    Download

SRT for YouTube or a video editor, VTT for a web player.

Why set the subtitles to Czech?

Because Czech and Slovak are so close that a short stretch whose language is guessed may be written the Slovak way, with ä or ô where Czech has none. Set to Czech, every subtitle follows Czech spelling, ř and ů included.

For a video where the speakers switch to Slovak or English for long passages, the main subtitle generator is better: it works out the language of each passage separately.

Do Czech subtitles keep v, k, s and z off the end of a line?

As a rule, yes. Czech typography keeps a one-letter preposition or conjunction on the same line as the word after it, and the generator avoids ending a line on such a short word. In our Czech test, none of 165 lines ended on one.

Thousands kept whole
The subtitle’s lines6 000 lidí z celého / počtu 330 000 infikovaných
A decimal comma and units
The subtitle’s linesStandard 802.11n operuje / na frekvencích 2,4 GHz i 5 GHz.
Numbers with units
The subtitle’s lineskterý se od pobřeží táhne 80 km 50 mil / do vnitrozemí Bangladeše a Indie.

What should you check in Czech subtitles?

Long numbers. The same typographic rule keeps “10 kg” and “6 000” on one line. The generator keeps a number with its unit, as with “80 km” and “50 mil”, and keeps the groups of a long figure like “330 000” together.

In our test every figure stayed whole. The numbers themselves already follow Czech style: a space in “330 000”, a decimal comma in “2,4 GHz” and a full stop after an ordinal (“Během 20. let”). A time came back as “ve 23.35”.

How do Czech subtitles show quotations and two speakers?

With „ “ quotation marks, and a hyphen and a space at the start of each speaker’s line, as in “- Co chceš?” over “- Počkej, dej mi chvilku.”, in Netflix’s Czech style guide. The web generator adds no speaker hyphens.

That guide also keeps lines to 42 characters and reading to 17 characters a second for adults, the same limits as this page, and writes one to ten in words.

Czech subtitles with speaker names, on your Mac?

Czech is on the list of languages NoteOwl understands on a Mac. It transcribes Czech recordings there with unlimited transcription, tells the speakers apart and saves SRT subtitles with their names. For a Czech transcript to read, use Czech audio to text.

FAQ

Czech titulky: questions

Is the Czech subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 Czech videos a day, 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark, and download SRT, VTT or text.

Can it make Czech subtitles for an English film?

No. It writes the Czech that is spoken and doesn’t translate. For an English film, make English subtitles first, translate each subtitle’s text into Czech and keep the numbers and times.

Will ř and ů display correctly?

Yes, as long as the file stays in UTF-8, the encoding it is saved in. If an editor shows odd characters, it opened the file in an older Central European encoding; choose UTF-8 when you import or save.

Does it work for Slovak speakers?

This page writes everything as Czech. For a video in Slovak, use the Slovak page, which keeps Slovak spelling, or the main generator for a video that mixes the two.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the video on your device. Only short pieces of its sound are sent, over a secure connection, to a cloud AI transcription service that transcribes and discards them; NoteOwl keeps nothing.
