How it works
How do you add Finnish subtitles to a video?
Drop the video on the page. Its sound is transcribed in Finnish piece by piece, and the words are laid out as timed subtitles of one or two lines. Read them through in the preview, then download the SRT or VTT file.
- 1
Pick the video
A luento, a vlog, an interview or a webinar, as a video file or its audio.
- 2
See the tekstitys
Every subtitle shows its number, start and end time and its lines. Up to 30 minutes of each video are subtitled.
- 3
Download
SRT for YouTube or an editing program, VTT for a web player.
Why set the subtitles to Finnish?
Because a guessed language can trip on a short, quiet stretch, and Finnish has close relatives such as Estonian. A subtitle in the wrong language halts the viewer. Set to Finnish, every subtitle is written in Finnish, ä and ö included.
A video that moves between Finnish and Swedish or English for whole passages works better on the main subtitle generator, which identifies the language of each passage itself.
How do long Finnish words fit on a subtitle line?
Whole, and with fewer words to a line. Finnish words averaged almost eight letters in our test, the longest of all the alphabetic languages we laid out, so a 42-character line holds four or five. “presidenttiehdokkuudestaan” (26 letters) still fitted beside another word.
Lines still averaged about 30 characters, because a line breaks only at a space and never inside a word.
- A 26-letter word
- The subtitle’s linesilmoitti presidenttiehdokkuudestaan / eilen illalla 50 kilometrin
- A 24-letter word
- The subtitle’s linesSundarban on julistettu Unescon / maailmanperintökohteeksi.
- A hyphenated word
- The subtitle’s linesRolando Mendoza ampui / matkailijoita päin M16-kiväärillä.
| What it shows | The subtitle’s lines |
|---|---|
| A 26-letter word | ilmoitti presidenttiehdokkuudestaan / eilen illalla 50 kilometrin |
| A 24-letter word | Sundarban on julistettu Unescon / maailmanperintökohteeksi. |
| A hyphenated word | Rolando Mendoza ampui / matkailijoita päin M16-kiväärillä. |
What should you check in Finnish subtitles?
Hyphens left at the end of a line. Finnish shortens “kauppakysymyksistä ja terrorismikysymyksistä” to “kauppa- ja terrorismikysymyksistä”, and in our test the line broke straight after “kauppa-”, which can look like a word split in two. Move “kauppa-” down to the next line if you prefer.
Numbers are worth a look too: our test wrote “30 prosenttia” in words and an ordinal with a full stop, “78. suosituksesta”, both standard Finnish.
How do Finnish subtitles mark a second speaker?
With a hyphen and no space on the second speaker’s line only, as in “Se ei ole valmis.” over “-Mikä?”, according to Netflix’s Finnish style guide. The web generator adds no speaker marks; put the hyphen in where two voices share a subtitle.
The guide’s limits are this page’s too, 42 characters a line and 17 a second, though it asks translators for a condensed style. It writes a space in 10 000, a decimal comma and times as “kello 7.45”.
Finnish subtitles with speaker names, made on a Mac?
NoteOwl understands Finnish on your Mac: it transcribes Finnish recordings there with unlimited transcription, distinguishes each speaker and saves SRT subtitles with their names, using on-device AI models. For a Finnish transcript to read, use Finnish audio to text.
FAQ
Finnish tekstitys: questions
Is the Finnish subtitle generator free?
Yes. Subtitle 3 Finnish videos a day, 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark, and download the SRT, VTT or text.
Can it make Finnish subtitles for an English video?
No. It writes down Finnish speech as Finnish and doesn’t translate. For an English video, create English subtitles, translate the text of each one and keep its number and times.
Does it hyphenate long words?
No. A word is never broken across two lines, however long it is. A very long word simply takes most of a line, and the rest of the sentence moves to the next line or subtitle.
Will ä and ö look right in my video editor?
Yes, as long as the file stays UTF-8, the encoding it is saved in. After editing, save it as UTF-8 again so ä and ö don’t turn into odd symbols.
Is my video sent to NoteOwl?
No. Your browser keeps the video on your device and sends only short pieces of its sound, securely, to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards each one. The subtitles are made in the page and NoteOwl stores nothing.
