How it works

How do you transcribe Finnish audio?

Drop in the file and keep the page open. It is cut at pauses into short pieces, each transcribed as Finnish, and the paragraphs appear with their start times one after another. Copy the Finnish transcript or download it once the last piece is in.

  1. 1

    Choose a file

A sanelu from your phone, a WhatsApp voice message, a recorded luento or the sound of a Teams video.

  2. 2

    Let it transcribe

Text appears paragraph by paragraph with times. Each file is transcribed for its first 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Take it with you

Copy it, or save TXT, Word, SRT or VTT.

Does it keep ä, ö and long Finnish compounds?

Yes. Our Finnish test transcript used ä and ö throughout and kept long words whole: “maailmanperintökohteeksi”, “hiilidioksidipäästöjä”, “presidenttiehdokkuudestaan”. Foreign letters in names stayed too, as in “Erdoğanin” and “Fernández”.

Why check long and short sounds in a Finnish transcript?

Because in Finnish the length of a sound changes the word, tuli (fire) against tuuli (wind), and a doubled letter is where small slips hide. In our test “takajalallaan” gained an extra l and “retket” came back as “retkeät”.

Endings deserve the same look: “ihmisten välisen” lost its plural and became “ihmisen välisen”, and “Ison-Britannian” became “Iso-Britannian”. Both read as real Finnish, so only the audio settles them.

How are numbers and abbreviations written?

Numbers mostly as digits, and endings joined to abbreviations with a hyphen, as in “M16-kiväärillä”. The colon Finnish uses before a case ending on abbreviations such as YK:n went missing once, so look for it.

“kolmetoista osavaltiota”
In the transcript“13 osavaltiota”
“numero yksi”
In the transcript“numero 1”
“seitsemän alusta”
In the transcriptKept in words
Per cent
In the transcript“30 prosenttia”, written as a word
“YK:n tautiasiantuntija”
In the transcript“YK Tautiasiantuntija”

Does it write spoken Finnish or the written standard?

Our tests used standard Finnish read aloud, and the transcript came back in that standard. Everyday puhekieli, such as mä oon for minä olen, sounds quite different from written Finnish, so try a short clip of a casual conversation first.

The page is fixed to Finnish, which keeps a short piece from being mistaken for Estonian, its close relative. In bilingual meetings that switch between Finnish and Swedish or English for whole stretches, use the main audio to text converter, which detects each piece’s language.

FAQ

Questions about Finnish audio to text

Is the Finnish converter free?

Yes. Up to 3 Finnish recordings a day, 30 minutes each, without an account. Text, Word and subtitle downloads are included.

Why set the converter to Finnish?

So the language is never guessed. Estonian is close enough to Finnish that a short or quiet piece could be taken for it; with Finnish fixed, every piece is spelled as Finnish.

Will foreign names be spelled right?

Often not. Names are written the way a Finnish ear hears them: in our test Sintra became “Sindran” and Yosemite “josimitena”. Read every name against the audio.

Does NoteOwl keep my Finnish recording?

No. The browser sends short pieces of sound over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards them; NoteOwl stores no audio and no text.

Can I make Finnish subtitles?

Yes. Download the transcript as SRT or VTT. Every subtitle has its start and end time, and long compound words stay intact.

How accurate is the Finnish transcript?

Clear speech comes back almost word for word with its endings. Doubled letters, plural endings and foreign names are the places to check.
