How it works

How do you translate English subtitles into Finnish?

Upload the SRT or VTT here, with Finnish already set as the target. Press Translate: the text of the subtitles goes out in batches and comes back in Finnish, placed at the original times. Check it over, then download.

  1. 1

    Upload the subtitles

English is recognised on its own; for Swedish, German or another source, choose it under From.

  2. 2

    Translate into Finnish

Subtitles next to each other are translated as a group, so a sentence split in two still reads as Finnish.

  3. 3

    Download the Finnish file

SRT, VTT or a bilingual SRT, named with fi, such as Jakso 1.fi.srt.

Do Finnish subtitles fit in the English timing?

Usually. In our test, Finnish translations came out about the same length as the English overall. Each subtitle keeps its time and gets two lines at most, but Finnish packs a lot into single words, which a line never splits.

Lines aim for 42 characters, read at about 17 characters a second. A word such as “maailmanperintökohteeksi” (as a World Heritage site) takes over half a line by itself, so a subtitle with two or three of them may run a little long; shorten the wording if it looks crowded.

Do Finnish subtitles say sinä or te?

Both, which is worth tidying. One request came back with sinä (“Voitko lähettää minulle raportin?”), while “you know” became “tiedättehän” and “Please sit down, sir” “Istukaa alas, herra”, both in the plural, polite form. Choose one form for your viewers and make the file consistent.

What happens to names in Finnish subtitles?

They take Finnish case endings, as Finnish requires. In our test, Fred became “Fredin”, Oahu “Oahu'lla” and the Grand Prix “Grand Prix'n”, some of them with an apostrophe before the ending. Check that the name itself, before the ending, is spelled right.

Titles may be written out: “Dr. Patel” became “Tohtori Patel”. Finnish hän means both he and she, so “Our doctor said she would call” turned into “Lääkärimme sanoi, että hän soittaa”, with nothing to fix.

How do Finnish subtitles write numbers, times and quotes?

The Finnish way. Decimals take a comma and thousands a space (“6,5 prosenttia”, “1 250 dollariin”), clock times a full stop (“kello 15.30”), and dates a full stop after the day (“16. lokakuuta 2026”). Quotations open and close with the same mark: ”hyödylliseksi”.

The price went up by 6.5 percent to $1,250.

The meeting is on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 p.m.
FinnishKokous on 16. lokakuuta 2026 kello 15.30.
Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez will lead the session.
FinnishTohtori Patel ja Maria Lopez johtavat istunnon.

Is it written Finnish or spoken Finnish?

Written, standard Finnish: “minulle”, not the spoken “mulle”. That suits most subtitles. A casual vlog whose speakers use puhekieli may want a few lines loosened by hand. In our test, translation into Finnish scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with.

FAQ

Questions about Finnish subtitle translation

Is translating subtitles to Finnish free?

Yes. 3 subtitle files a day go into Finnish free, each with up to 30,000 characters of text, and no account is needed.

Can Swedish subtitles be translated into Finnish?

Yes. Set From to Swedish and the subtitles go straight into Finnish. Read part of the Finnish before you publish it.

Will the Finnish subtitles stay in sync?

Yes. Every subtitle keeps its number and its start and end times from your file, so the Finnish appears exactly when the original did.

Can I see the original and the Finnish together?

Yes. The bilingual SRT shows the original line with the Finnish beneath it in every subtitle, which helps learners and anyone checking the translation.

Are speaker names and italics kept?

A speaker’s “Name:” at the start of a subtitle stays in front of the Finnish, untranslated, and italics around a whole subtitle are kept. VTT positions and styling are dropped.

What happens to my subtitle file?

It opens in your browser. Only the subtitle text is sent, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which discards it once translated. NoteOwl stores neither file.
