How it works

How do you make Malay subtitles for a video?

Drop the video on the page. The sound is transcribed as Malay piece by piece, and the words fill subtitles of one or two lines that appear with the speech. Read through the preview, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Pick a video

A ceramah, a class, a vlog or a product video: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or the audio.

  2. 2

    Malay subtitles

The speech is written in Bahasa Melayu, for up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download

SRT for YouTube and editing apps, VTT for a web player, or plain text.

How are Malay subtitles laid out?

In one or two lines of up to 42 characters, split at commas and between phrases, never inside a word. Reduplicated words such as satu-satunya and anak-anaknya keep their hyphen.

Our 40 Malay test sentences became 98 subtitles, most of them two lines of about 30 characters.

Malaysian spelling
Its two linesIngat bahawa walaupun muzik / di pentas utama telah tamat,
Reduplication
Its two linesKini, satu-satunya / serangga yang tidak boleh
No closing full stop
Its two linesGibson dibawa ke hospital tetapi / meninggal dunia tidak lama kemudian

What happens to sentence ends in Malay subtitles?

Most come back unmarked: only 13 of our 40 test sentences closed with a full stop. The generator then ends subtitles at commas and at the speaker’s pauses, and a new sentence can show up mid-line with a capital, as in “telah dibuat Kini dikenali”.

Put in the full stops and lower-case the stray capitals in the SRT before you publish, so each subtitle reads cleanly.

Why set the subtitle language to Malay?

So the subtitles keep Malaysian spelling. Indonesian is a standardised form of Malay, and a guessed language can switch to Indonesian spellings or another language altogether. Set to Malay, words such as bahawa, kerana and muzik stayed Malaysian; bahagian slipped to bagian once.

For an Indonesian video, use the Indonesian subtitle page instead. For a video that switches into English for whole sentences, the main subtitle generator finds each stretch’s language.

What happens to English words in Malay subtitles?

Everyday ones stay in English, as mood and mayfly did. Longer English phrases are where slips happen: “Hostile environment course” came back as “Hostel Environment Cost”. Check those, and names, against the video.

  • English phrases

“Internet” came back as “Ethernet” in the same sentence. Read borrowed terms twice.

  • Distances

“50 kilometer (31 batu)” came back as one number, “50,361 batu”. Check figures with units.

  • Compound words

Jurufoto (photographer) came back as “Curuh foto”. Watch words built from two parts.

Is there a Mac app for subtitles from recordings?

NoteOwl transcribes recordings on your Mac with unlimited transcription, in English and the other languages it understands, Malay not among them, and saves SRT subtitles that name each speaker. For Malay, stay with this page; for a Malay transcript, use Malay audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about Malay subtitles

Is the Malay subtitle generator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 Malay videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, without an account and without a watermark.

Can it make English subtitles for a Malay video?

No. The subtitles are in the Malay that is spoken; the generator doesn’t translate. Translate the SRT’s text into English and leave its numbers and times as they are.

Where does my video go?

It stays on your device. The browser takes out its sound, and short pieces of that sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each and discards it. NoteOwl keeps no copy.

How do I correct the subtitles?

Open the SRT or VTT in a text editor, fix the words, add full stops where you want them and save as UTF-8. Keep the numbers and times unchanged.

Can the subtitles be burned into the video?

Not on this page: it gives you a subtitle file. Burn it in with a video editor when you export, or upload it next to the video.
