How it works

How do you make Indonesian subtitles for a video?

Drop the video here. Its sound is transcribed as Indonesian, a short piece at a time, and laid out as subtitles of one or two lines that appear as the words are spoken. Look over the preview, then download SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Choose the video

A YouTube video, a webinar, a class or a reel: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or its audio.

  2. 2

    Subtitles in Indonesian

Every piece is written in Bahasa Indonesia, up to 30 minutes into the video.

  3. 3

    Download them

SRT for YouTube and video editors, VTT for a web player, or plain text.

How are Indonesian subtitles laid out?

In one or two lines of up to 42 characters, broken at a comma or between phrases. A subtitle runs from its first word for 1 to 7 seconds and ends at a full stop, a comma or a pause.

Our 40 Indonesian test sentences became 91 subtitles, nearly all of them two lines of about 30 characters.

Why do some Indonesian subtitles lack full stops?

Because the speech often comes back without them: fewer than half our test sentences ended with one. Subtitles then close at the speaker’s pauses, and now and then a capital lands mid-line where a sentence should have ended, as in “bahasa Katalan Tetapi”.

Before publishing, add the missing full stops in the SRT and turn the stray capitals back into small letters.

Why set the subtitle language to Indonesian?

So every subtitle follows Indonesian spelling. Indonesian is a standardised form of Malay, and a guessed language can drift into Malaysian spellings or another language. Even set to Indonesian, Spanyol and Prancis came back once as Sepanyol and Perancis.

For a video where people switch into English for whole sentences, use the main subtitle generator, which finds the language of each stretch.

What should you check in Indonesian subtitles?

Foreign names and technical terms. Common words came back close to what was said; the slips were names written by ear and terms heard as other words.

  • Names

Ed Davey came back as Ed Dewey and Norman Lamb as Norman Lem.

  • Technical terms

“Bom fisi”, a fission bomb, came back as “POM-VC”. Check science and tech words.

  • Amounts

Dollar amounts came back with the word, “5 dolar dan 100 dolar”, not the sign. Pick one style for the whole video.

Does NoteOwl have a subtitle app for Mac?

Yes, for the languages it understands, and Indonesian isn’t one of them. NoteOwl transcribes recordings on your Mac with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. Keep this page for Indonesian; for an Indonesian transcript, use Indonesian audio to text.

FAQ

Questions about Indonesian subtitles

Is the Indonesian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Make subtitles for 3 Indonesian videos a day, up to 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark.

Does it work for Malay videos?

Malay has its own subtitle page, set to Malay and its spelling. This page writes Indonesian spelling, so use it for videos in Bahasa Indonesia.

Can it make English subtitles for an Indonesian video?

No. It writes the Indonesian that is spoken; nothing is translated. Translate the text of the SRT into English and keep its numbers and times unchanged.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The browser opens it on your device and pulls out the sound. Short pieces of the sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each and discards it, and NoteOwl stores nothing.

Can I edit the subtitles?

Yes. Open the SRT or VTT in a text editor, fix the words and save it as UTF-8. Leave the numbers, the times and the blank lines between subtitles as they are.

Can it burn the subtitles into my video?

No, it makes a subtitle file. Upload the file with the video, or burn it in with a video editor when you export, for feeds that play videos muted.
