Norwegian subtitle generator

This Norwegian subtitle generator writes undertekster for a video spoken in Norwegian: æ, ø and å in place, long compounds such as rekonstruksjonskontrakter kept whole, every subtitle timed to the speaker and ready as SRT or VTT.

How it works

How do you make Norwegian subtitles for a video?

Drop the video on the page. Its sound is transcribed in Norwegian a little at a time, and the text is cut into timed undertekster of one or two lines. Look through them in the preview, then save the SRT or the VTT.

  1. 1

    Choose the video

A forelesning, a vlog, an interview or a company video, as video or as its audio alone.

  2. 2

    Check the undertekster

Each one is listed with its number, times and lines. The first 30 minutes of a long video are subtitled.

  3. 3

    Save it

SRT for YouTube or an editor, VTT for a website player, or the plain text.

Why set the subtitles to Norwegian?

Because Norwegian sits so close to Danish and Swedish that a short stretch whose language is guessed may come back in a neighbour’s spelling. Set to Norwegian, every subtitle is written in Norwegian; in our test, that meant Bokmål.

When speakers switch between Norwegian and English for long passages, the main subtitle generator is the better choice, because it decides the language of each passage itself.

Do long Norwegian words fit in a subtitle?

Yes. Lines break only between words, so a 25-letter “rekonstruksjonskontrakter” takes a line with room to spare out of 42, and “Nordkivu-provinsen” keeps its hyphen. Our Norwegian lines averaged about 30 characters.

A 25-letter word
The subtitle’s linesvært fokusert på utarbeidelse / av rekonstruksjonskontrakter.
A hyphenated name
The subtitle’s linesfor å forstå seg på kampene / som pågår i Nordkivu-provinsen.
Æ, ø and å
The subtitle’s linesEn bombe eksploderte utenfor / kontoret til generalgubernøren.

How does the generator handle “ca.” before a number?

It keeps “ca.” with the number that follows, so no subtitle ends on the abbreviation. In our test “fra ca. 400 år etter Kristus” stayed on one line.

The same went for “er på ca. 800.” in the next subtitle, and for other abbreviations that come before a figure, such as “nr.” and “kl.”.

What do Norwegian subtitle conventions look like?

Netflix’s Norwegian guide uses the same 42 characters a line and 17 a second as this page, marks two speakers with a hyphen and no space (“-John?” / “-Han er ikke hjemme.”), and writes one to twelve in words.

It also asks for a condensed style in translated subtitles, a decimal comma and a space in numbers from 10 000. Speaker hyphens are yours to add; the web generator writes the words alone. In Norway, as across the Nordic countries, usually only children’s programmes are dubbed.

Norwegian subtitles that say who is speaking?

NoteOwl, the Mac app, understands Norwegian in Bokmål and Nynorsk, as its list of languages shows. It transcribes Norwegian recordings on your Mac with unlimited transcription, keeps speakers apart and saves SRT subtitles with their names. For a Norwegian transcript instead, use Norwegian audio to text.

FAQ

Norwegian undertekster: questions

Is the Norwegian subtitle generator free?

Yes. Up to 3 Norwegian videos a day get subtitles, the first 30 minutes of each, with no account and no watermark, in SRT, VTT and text.

Will the subtitles be in Bokmål or Nynorsk?

Our test recordings were read from Bokmål texts and came back in Bokmål. The page has one Norwegian setting, so if your subtitles must be in Nynorsk, adjust the word forms when you edit the file.

Can it make Norwegian subtitles for an English video?

No. It writes the Norwegian that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Subtitle the English video in English, translate each subtitle’s text, and keep the numbers and times as they are.

Can I edit the subtitles before publishing?

Yes. Open the SRT or VTT in any text editor, fix a word or merge two subtitles, and save it as UTF-8 so æ, ø and å stay correct. Leave the timing lines in their exact format.

Does my video leave my device?

No, only its sound does, in short pieces sent over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service that transcribes and discards each one. Your browser reads the video locally, builds the subtitles, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
