How it works
How do you translate subtitles into Norwegian?
Drop the SRT or VTT file on this page, which is set to Norwegian. Press Translate; the subtitle text is translated a batch at a time and dropped back into the original timing. Read through the Norwegian, then download it.
- 1
Add your subtitle file
English is spotted automatically; for a Swedish, Danish or German file, set it under From.
- 2
Translate into Bokmål
Subtitles that sit next to each other are translated together, so a split sentence still holds.
- 3
Download the result
SRT, VTT or a bilingual SRT, named with the code no, such as Episode 1.no.srt.
Are the subtitles in Bokmål or Nynorsk?
Bokmål. The translator is asked for Norwegian Bokmål, the written standard most Norwegians use, and the test lines read that way: “Legen vår sa at hun ville ringe tilbake i morgen.” It does not write Nynorsk, so a Nynorsk audience needs a manual pass.
Will Norwegian subtitles fit the original timing?
Yes, comfortably. In our test, Norwegian translations ran about the same length as the English sentences, and each subtitle keeps its original start and end time. The Norwegian is laid out again in at most two lines.
Lines aim for 42 characters, with time to read at about 17 characters a second. A subtitle never gains a third line or splits in two; if one reads tight, shorten it.
How are dates, quotes and units written in Norwegian?
The Norwegian way, with one exception. Dates take a full stop after the day (“den 16. oktober 2026, kl. 15:30”), quotations sit in « », and km/h becomes km/t. The price “$1,250” kept its English comma; Norwegian writes the thousands with a space.

Do Norwegian subtitles say du to everyone?
Yes, as Norwegian does. “Kan du sende meg rapporten før fredag?” is informal and normal. A polite English “sir” had no Norwegian match and stayed English: “Vennligst sett deg ned, sir.” Remove it, or the whole phrase, if your viewers would find it odd.

FAQ
Questions about Norwegian subtitle translation
Is translating subtitles to Norwegian free?
Yes. Translate 3 subtitle files a day into Norwegian, up to 30,000 characters of text each, without an account.
How good is the translation into Norwegian?
In our test, translation from English into Norwegian scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Read it once for names and figures before you publish.
Do the Norwegian subtitles stay in sync?
Yes. The subtitle numbers and the start and end times are copied from your file, so the Norwegian appears exactly where the original did.
Can I show the original and the Norwegian at once?
Yes. The bilingual SRT puts the original line on top and the Norwegian underneath in every subtitle, at the same times.
What is the Norwegian file called?
Your file’s name with the language code no added, such as Episode 1.no.srt. A language code already in the name, like .en, is replaced, so the original and the translation sit side by side in a folder.
Is my subtitle file kept?
No. Your browser opens it, and only the subtitle text is sent, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which discards it after translating. NoteOwl keeps no copy.
