How it works
How do you translate subtitles into Catalan?
Drop the SRT or VTT here; Catalan is preset as the target. The page recognises the file’s language, translates the text in batches of neighbouring subtitles and writes the Catalan back against the original timecodes. Read it, then save.

Add the subtitle file
English, Spanish, French or another listed language, as .srt or .vtt.

Catalan SRT or VTT, or a bilingual SRT with the original line above the Catalan.
Can I translate Spanish subtitles into Catalan?
Yes. Pick Spanish under From, or let the page detect it, and the subtitles go straight into Catalan at their original times. In our test, “Fue derrotado, hace poco” became “Va ser derrotat, fa poc”, and countries gained Catalan articles: “l’Índia i el Pakistan”.
One habit to watch: the Spanish “a. m.” stayed in “a les 8:46 a. m.”. Catalan subtitles usually write the hour on its own or with “del matí”, so tidy those after a Spanish file.
Do Catalan subtitles use ¿ and ¡?
No, and the translation didn’t add them: “Em pots enviar l’informe abans de divendres?” and “Això és increïble!” end with the mark only, as Catalan normally writes. The punt volat stays too, as in col·lisió.
Do Catalan subtitles need more room than English?
A little: Catalan ran about a tenth longer than English in our test. Every subtitle keeps its original time, so a longer translation gets two fuller lines, never a third.
Lines aim for 42 characters and break between phrases. The layout avoids ending a line on a short word such as “i”, “de” or “la”, and never splits an apostrophe pair like l’informe or d’octubre.
Will viewers be addressed as tu, vosaltres or vostè?
All three appeared, following the English: tu in “Em pots enviar…?”, vosaltres for a group in “ja sabeu”, and vostè with “sir”. That polite line came back in an unusual verb form, so read any vostè lines before publishing.
What should you check in Catalan subtitles?
Titles and Spanish spellings. Our test kept “La nostra doctora” for a woman doctor, but also made Dr. Patel a woman (“La Dra. Patel”) and wrote “dirigirán” with a Spanish accent. Numbers came out Catalan style: “6,5 per cent”, “1.250 $”, “a les 15:30 h”.
Overall, translation from English into Catalan scored above the dedicated translation system we compared it with in our test.
Recording in Spanish or English?
NoteOwl understands Spanish and English on your Mac: it transcribes recordings with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with speaker names, ready to translate into Catalan here. It doesn’t transcribe Catalan; for Catalan speech, use the Catalan subtitle generator.
FAQ
Questions about Catalan subtitle translation
Is translating subtitles to Catalan free?
Yes. 3 subtitle files a day, with up to 30,000 characters of text in each; no account and no watermark.
Is the Catalan suitable for Valencia and the Balearic Islands?
It’s standard Catalan, which viewers in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands all read. If your audience expects Valencian forms, adjust them in the downloaded file.
Can I keep the Spanish or English line above the Catalan?
Yes. The bilingual SRT shows the original line and the Catalan under it in each subtitle, handy for language classes and for checking.
Will the Catalan subtitles stay in sync?
They will. The numbers and the start and end times are copied from your file, so the Catalan lines up exactly where the original did.
What happens to VTT positions and styles?
They aren’t carried over. The Catalan VTT keeps its header, times and cue ids, while italics around a whole subtitle and a speaker’s “Name:” survive as part of the text.
Is my file uploaded?
The file stays in your browser. Only the subtitle text is sent, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which hands back the Catalan and discards the text; NoteOwl keeps nothing.
