How do you make Catalan subtitles for a video?

How are Catalan subtitles laid out?
In one or two lines of up to 42 characters, broken after a comma or between phrases and kept off short words such as “de” or “la” at the end of a line. A new subtitle begins after a full stop, a comma or a pause.
Our 40 Catalan test sentences became 101 subtitles, most of them two lines of about 30 characters.

Do apostrophes and l·l come through in Catalan subtitles?
Yes. Elided articles and pronouns are written joined to their word, as in l'argent, d'una and s'havia, and the middle dot of l·l is kept, as in sol·licituds and satèl·lit. Accents and ç are all there, saved as UTF-8.
Why set the subtitle language to Catalan?
So no stretch of Catalan is subtitled as Spanish or another neighbouring language by mistake, which can happen when the language is guessed. Set to Catalan, every subtitle stays Catalan, though a borrowed word can still come back in its English form: l'hoquei came back as hockey.
For a video where people switch between Catalan and Spanish sentence by sentence, the main subtitle generator is better: it detects each stretch’s language.
What should you check in Catalan subtitles?
English names, times and words that sound like other words. The everyday Catalan came back close to what was said; the slips sat in names and in the odd sound-alike, one of which you wouldn’t want on screen.

USA Gymnastics came back as “Usos gimnàstics”, and Layton as Leighton.
Times
11:35 PM came back as 11.35 pm. Choose one style and use it throughout.
Sound-alikes
A word meaning “nonsense” came back as an unrelated one. Read every line before publishing.

Can it make Spanish or English subtitles from Catalan speech?
No. It writes the Catalan that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Translate the text of the SRT and keep its numbers and times unchanged.
Is the video sent anywhere?
The video isn’t. Your browser takes out its sound on your device, and short pieces of that sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes and discards each one. NoteOwl stores nothing.
How do I edit a Catalan subtitle?
Open the SRT or VTT in a text editor, fix the word and save the file as UTF-8 so the accents and l·l survive. Leave the numbers and times as they are.
