How it works

How do you translate English subtitles into Thai?

Drop the English SRT or VTT on the page; Thai is already the target. Press Translate subtitles, and runs of neighbouring subtitles are translated together and returned in Thai, each at its original time. Check the polite particles and names, then download.

  1. 1

    Add your subtitle file

An .srt or .vtt in English or another language on the list; English is recognised for you.

  2. 2

    Translate to Thai

Neighbouring subtitles go together, so a sentence split over two of them is translated whole.

  3. 3

    Save the Thai file

A .th.srt or .th.vtt, or a bilingual SRT with the English above the Thai.

How much room do Thai subtitles need?

About a tenth more than English. Thai uses slightly fewer characters than English, but its lines hold 35 rather than 42. In our check of ten translated sentences, five fit on one line and five took two; a subtitle never gets a third.

Thai leaves no spaces between words, so the page breaks a line where the browser’s Thai word list finds a boundary, or at a space between phrases: “คุณส่งรายงานให้ฉัน” on top, “ก่อนวันศุกร์ได้ไหม?” below.

Will the Thai subtitles sound like a man or a woman?

Where a polite particle appears, like a man. “Please sit down, sir” became “กรุณานั่งลงครับ”, ending in ครับ, which men say. If the speaker on screen is a woman, change it to ค่ะ, and search the file for ครับ to catch every line.

“You” came back as คุณ, the polite everyday form, and “Our doctor said she…” became “คุณหมอบอกว่า…”, with no pronoun at all, so the rest of the Thai reads the same for any speaker.

What happens to English punctuation in Thai subtitles?

Most of it goes. The Thai dropped every full stop, and commas became spaces: “Well, you know, it’s kind of a big deal” came back as “เอ่อ คุณรู้ไหม มันเป็นเรื่องใหญ่พอสมควร”. Question and exclamation marks stayed, which some Thai subtitle styles leave out.

Are dates and names written the Thai way?

Partly. The time used the 24-hour clock with น. (“15:30 น.”) and names were written in Thai script, but the year stayed 2026 rather than the Buddhist-era 2569 that many Thai viewers expect. Change the year in the file if your audience reads it that way.

Names in Thai script are spelled by sound, as in “ดร.พาเทล และมาเรีย โลเปซ” for Dr. Patel and Maria Lopez, so compare them with how the people themselves write their names in Thai.

FAQ

Thai subtitle translation: questions

Is translating subtitles to Thai free?

Yes. 3 files a day, each up to 30,000 characters of subtitle text, with no account needed.

Will Thai vowels and tone marks display correctly?

Yes, in players that read UTF-8, which the Thai file is saved in. If marks stack oddly or show as boxes, choose a subtitle font that includes Thai.

How good is the Thai translation?

In our test of 50 sentences, translation into Thai scored clearly above the dedicated translation system we compared it with. Particles, the year and names are the things to adjust for your viewers.

Can I keep the English under the Thai?

Yes. The bilingual SRT puts the original line and the Thai line in the same subtitle, at the same time, for learners and for checking the translation.

Does the timing stay exactly the same?

Yes. Every number, start and end is copied from your file, and the count of subtitles doesn’t change.

Is my file sent to a server?

The file is opened in your browser. Only its subtitle text is sent, in batches, to a cloud AI translation service, which translates it and keeps nothing; NoteOwl stores neither file.
