How it works

How do you get English subtitles for a Hindi video?

To translate a Hindi video to English, add it to this page. The Hindi speech is transcribed in Devanagari, translated, and placed as English subtitles at the moments each line is said. Read the subtitles on the page and download the English SRT.

  1. 1

    Add the Hindi video

A lecture, a vlog, a wedding video or an interview: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM.

  2. 2

    Hindi in, English out

Transcribed as Hindi, then translated, for up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download the subtitles

English SRT or VTT; the Hindi subtitles are under Original.

How well is spoken Hindi understood?

Well enough for the meaning to come through, though Hindi speech into English scored lower than most languages in our test. Names and borrowed words are the likeliest slips, and names are spelled back by sound: Raonic came out as “Ronic”.

What happens to English words spoken in Hindi?

They come back as English. In our speech test, a sentence about “टेलीविजन रिपोर्टों” (television reports) was transcribed with a misspelling, “टेलेविजिन”, and still became “Television reports have shown white smoke coming out of the plant.”

Hindi speakers often borrow English words, so this matters for vlogs and talks. A borrowed word the transcript gets badly wrong is translated as heard, so check technical terms and brand names in the English SRT.

Do English subtitles follow the Hindi word order?

No. Hindi puts the verb at the end and English near the start, so the English is cut into subtitles after translation, along English sentences: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, timed to the speech and paced at 17 characters a second.

The Hindi subtitles under Original keep their own cuts, in Devanagari. Publishing both lets Hindi speakers keep the original words.

Can it subtitle a video in Hinglish?

This page hears everything as Hindi. English words inside Hindi sentences are written in Devanagari or in Latin letters and come out as English. For a video that moves between whole stretches of Hindi and English, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Recording Hindi videos and calls?

NoteOwl understands Hindi on your Mac, writes it in Devanagari and keeps up when speakers switch to English mid-sentence. Import an MP4, get a transcript from unlimited transcription and save SRT subtitles with speaker names. For Hindi subtitles alone, use the Hindi subtitle generator.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Hindi videos

Is the Hindi to English video translator free?

Yes. Subtitle 3 videos a day in English, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and nothing stamped on the result. The Hindi subtitles are included.

Does it make an English voice-over?

No. You get English subtitles; the video and its Hindi sound stay unchanged.

Can I add the English subtitles on YouTube?

Yes. Open the video in YouTube Studio, choose Subtitles, add English and upload the SRT with timing. Viewers can then turn English subtitles on.

Are the Hindi subtitles in Devanagari?

Yes. The Hindi subtitles are in Devanagari. English words spoken in Hindi appear sometimes in Devanagari and sometimes in Latin letters: our test transcript wrote “University of Dundee” as it is in English.

Do the subtitles show who is speaking?

No. The web subtitles carry the words only. NoteOwl on a Mac saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The browser takes out the sound on your computer and sends it in short clips to a cloud AI transcription service; the Hindi text then goes to a cloud AI translation service. Both discard it; the picture never leaves.
