Hindi subtitle generator

This Hindi subtitle generator writes Devanagari subtitles for a video spoken in Hindi: the language is set to Hindi, each subtitle holds one or two lines that follow the speaker, and the file downloads as SRT or VTT.

How it works

How do you make Hindi subtitles for a video?

Drop the video in. Its sound is transcribed as Hindi a short piece at a time, and the Devanagari is set out as subtitles timed to the speaker. Read them in the preview, then download the SRT or VTT file.

  1. 1

    Choose a Hindi video

A YouTube video, a class, a reel or an interview: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, or its audio.

  2. 2

    Devanagari subtitles

Each stretch of speech is written in Hindi, up to 30 minutes into the video.

  3. 3

    Get the file

SRT for YouTube and video editors, VTT for a web player, or plain text.

How long is a line of Hindi subtitles?

Up to 42 characters, and every vowel sign and virama counts as one. So a full Hindi line looks shorter than a full English one: in our test, the lines showed about two letters on screen for every three characters counted.

The time each subtitle stays up is worked out from the same count, at the same reading speed as other alphabets.

A distance in digits
Its two linesकिलोमीटर है और सबसे दूर के / सिरे पर यह 100 किलोमीटर है
An English loanword
Its two linesहर कोई समाज से जुड़ा होता है और / ट्रांसपोर्ट सिस्टम का उपयोग करता
Ending with a danda
Its two linesयह किसी अफरीकी शहर की / बजाए अरब शहर लगता है।

Where do Hindi subtitles end?

At a danda (।) when the speech comes back with one, and otherwise at the speaker’s pauses. Fewer than half our test sentences closed with a danda, so many subtitles end at a pause and the next one carries the thought on.

Commas were rare as well. If you want every sentence closed, add the danda in the SRT before publishing.

What happens to English words in Hindi subtitles?

Most are written in Devanagari, as ट्रांसपोर्ट सिस्टम was. Some came back in Latin letters inside the Hindi line instead, such as University of Dundee, so one subtitle can mix both scripts. Change them to one style if your channel prefers it.

Why set the subtitle language to Hindi?

Spoken Hindi and Urdu are very close, and a guessed language can take a stretch of Hindi for Urdu, whose subtitles would be in another script. Set to Hindi, every subtitle is in Devanagari, whoever is speaking.

For a video where people switch to whole sentences of English, the main subtitle generator works out each stretch’s language and subtitles the English parts in English.

What should you check in Hindi subtitles?

Names and borrowed words above all; they are the likeliest slips, because they are spelled by sound and can turn into other words. Then read every line against the video, with an eye on figures.

  • Places

जर्मनी (Germany) came back as चार्मिनी. Check each place name before you publish.

  • People

The surname Ferguson came back as फिंगरसन. Compare names with what you hear.

  • Figures in words

A few numbers came back as words, such as पंद्रा for 15. Swap in digits to match your other subtitles.

FAQ

Questions about Hindi subtitles

Is the Hindi subtitle generator free?

Yes. You can subtitle 3 Hindi videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, without signing up and without a watermark.

Can the subtitles be in Roman letters?

No. Set to Hindi, the subtitles are written in Devanagari. For romanised Hindi, run the SRT’s text through a transliteration tool; the numbers and times are not affected.

Can it make English subtitles for a Hindi video?

No, it writes the Hindi that is spoken and doesn’t translate. Translate the text of the SRT into English and keep every subtitle’s number and times unchanged.

Will Devanagari show correctly in my video editor?

The SRT and VTT files are saved as UTF-8, so the Devanagari is stored intact. If you burn the subtitles into the picture, choose a font that includes Devanagari.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The browser reads it on your device and takes out its sound. Short pieces of that sound go over a secure connection to a cloud AI transcription service, which transcribes each piece and discards it. NoteOwl stores neither the video nor the subtitles.

Do the subtitles name each speaker?

No, the web generator writes the words only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker and puts the name in the SRT files it saves.
