How it works
How do you get English subtitles for an Estonian video?
To translate an Estonian video to English, drop the file here. The browser takes out the sound, the Estonian speech is transcribed and translated, and English subtitles are timed to it. Load the SRT in your player, or publish it next to the video.
- 1
Choose the Estonian video
MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM: a lecture, an interview, a vlog, a video from home.
- 2
English subtitles are timed
Estonian speech is written down, then translated. Up to 30 minutes of each video.
- 3
Save SRT or VTT
Original holds the Estonian subtitles with the same timing.
Will English subtitles be longer than the Estonian?
Slightly, as a rule: Estonian ran a little shorter than English in our test. The English is laid out on its own terms, at most 2 lines of 42 characters per subtitle, shown long enough to read at 17 characters a second, so a busy passage gets fuller lines.
Because the English is cut into subtitles after translation, along its own sentences, it can have a subtitle more or fewer than the Estonian version under Original; each still starts when its words are spoken.
What happens to the case endings Estonian puts on names?
They come off. “Raonici vastu Brisbane Openil” became “to Raonic at the Brisbane Open”, “Skype’il” became “Skype”, and in our speech test “Blue Ashist” became “Blue Ash”. English viewers see the names as they know them.
- Hiljuti kaotas ta Raonici vastu Brisbane Openil.
- English subtitleHe recently lost to Raonic at the Brisbane Open.
- …nagu Hiinas, Ida-Euroopas ja Brasiilias.
- English subtitle…such as China, Eastern Europe, and Brazil.
- Nendest kividest 15 on pärit eelmise aasta juulikuu meteoriidisajust.
- English subtitleFifteen of these stones are from last July’s meteor shower.

How do Estonian numbers and dates read in English subtitles?
The English way. “2009. aasta”, with the full stop Estonian puts after an ordinal year, became plain “2009”, and “eelmise aasta juulikuu” became “last July’s”. A figure at the start of a sentence was written out: “15” became “Fifteen”.
How reliable is the Estonian behind the subtitles?
Good. In our test, Estonian speech was transcribed with slips mostly in names and rare words, and its English was rated good. The Estonian subtitles under Original are what the English came from, so an odd English line is quickest checked there.

FAQ
English subtitles for Estonian videos: questions
Is the Estonian to English video translator free?
Yes. 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, with no account and no watermark; English and Estonian subtitle files are both included.
Can I watch an Estonian film or series with these subtitles?
Up to 30 minutes of each video. Load the English SRT in a player such as VLC beside the video file.
Does it change the Estonian sound?
No. You get English subtitle files; the Estonian voices and the video file stay as they were.
How do I add English subtitles to an Estonian YouTube video?
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add English and upload the SRT with timing. The Estonian SRT from Original can be added as a second track.
What if people in the video switch to Russian or English?
This page transcribes the whole video as Estonian. For mixed speech, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Estonian text to a cloud AI translation service, each discarding it. The picture never leaves your device and NoteOwl keeps nothing.
