How it works
How do you get English subtitles for an Indonesian video?
To translate an Indonesian video to English, drop it on this page. The sound is transcribed in Indonesian, translated line by line, and the English is cut into subtitles where the words were spoken. Watch with the SRT, or publish it next to the video.
- 1
Drop in the video
MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, from a phone, a webinar or a download. Only the sound is read.
- 2
English subtitles appear
Indonesian is transcribed, then translated, for the first 30 minutes of each video.
- 3
Download the SRT or VTT
Switch to Original for Indonesian subtitles on the same timing.
Do English subtitles fit more easily than Indonesian ones?
Usually. Indonesian took about a tenth more characters than English in our English to Indonesian test, so English subtitles of the same speech rarely feel crowded. They are laid out after translating: 2 lines at most, about 42 characters each, long enough to read.
How well is Indonesian speech understood?
Well. Indonesian was transcribed cleanly in our test, and its speech came out strong in English. Measurements cross over intact: “105 mil per jam (165 km/jam)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”.
What happens to Indonesian word order in English subtitles?
It turns round where English needs it. Indonesian puts the describing word after the noun, so “Grand Prix Hungaria tahun 2009” became “the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix”. Because the English is cut into subtitles after translating, each subtitle reads as an English phrase, not a word-for-word copy.
- Pembalap Brasil itu mengalami cedera kepala serius…
- English subtitleThe Brazilian driver suffered a serious head injury…
- …pada Grand Prix Hungaria tahun 2009.
- English subtitle…at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.
- Serangan itu memicu ketegangan besar pada hubungan antara India dan Pakistan.
- English subtitleThe attack sparked major tension in the relationship between India and Pakistan.

What should you check before sharing English subtitles?
People’s names, brands and any English said inside the Indonesian. Those can be heard as Indonesian words before they are translated, and a misheard word stays misheard on screen. Watch once with the subtitles on before you share them.
Can I just watch the video with English subtitles?
Yes. Keep the SRT next to the video and open both in a player such as VLC, or upload it in YouTube Studio under Subtitles as English if the video is yours. The video file itself is never changed.
Making English videos as well?
NoteOwl understands English on your Mac, though not Indonesian: it imports MP4 video, transcribes it with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For Indonesian subtitles of Indonesian speech, use the Indonesian subtitle generator.
FAQ
Questions about English subtitles for Indonesian videos
Is the Indonesian to English video translator free?
Yes. 3 videos a day, up to 30 minutes each, with no account and no watermark. English and Indonesian subtitles are both included.
Does it dub the video into English?
No, there is no English voice. It writes English subtitles and never changes the video file.
Can I get the Indonesian subtitles too?
Yes. Switch to Original and download Indonesian subtitles with the same timing, handy for learners who want both.
What if the video mixes Indonesian and English?
This page hears everything as Indonesian. For a video that moves between the two, use the main video translator with Detect automatically.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The sound is taken out in your browser; short pieces go to a cloud AI transcription service and the transcript’s text to a cloud AI translation service, each discarding what it was sent. The picture never leaves your device.
Are speaker names shown?
No. The subtitles carry what was said, without names.
